Meant to do this sooner. Anyway, the critics often like to tack on additional performances given by people that they are awarding. This is sometimes to save space, like when Alicia Vikander kept winning joint awards for Ex Machina in addition to The Danish Girl and it is other times totally superfluous, like how the NSFC gave Brian Tyree Henry runner-up in Best Supporting Actor for Into the Spider-Verse last year (in addition to If Beale Street Could Talk and Widows). What I am more asking though is what will be our Things to Come this year? That one quietly entered the history books by sweeping Best Actress at NSFC, NYFCC and LAFCA (and BSFC) because Isabelle Huppert was already sweeping for far more iconic work in Elle.

-Theron has a shot at being double nominated at the Globes for Long Shot and Bombshell

-Dern already won NYFCC for both Marriage Story and Little Women

-ScarJo has been doubling up at regional critics circles for MS and Jojo Rabbit

Otherwise, I don’t see any action for these other performances.

Well, it’s already happened for Dern, but maybe that was a fluke. Voted for Driver, since I think “The Report” will be added to each “Marriage Story” citation.

Where else is Rockwell a possibility for? Anyway, it’s about time we have one of those again. Blanchett or Foxx got the last one. Let’s give it to Scarlett.

I just love movies. And awards.

Detroit nominated Sam Rockwell for Richard Jewell, for which he has top billing. People are misinterpreting my intentions a bit here. If you read my original post, I am not talking about someone getting a second nomination, but someone’s additional performance being lumped into an existing nomination, even though that second performance might never have been considered on its own. When I listed Jojo Rabbit for Scarlett Johansson, I was not referring to her being nominated in supporting for it alongside lead nominations for Marriage Story, but rather the potential for her to get Best Actress citations for them simultaneously. It would be like when Brad Pitt won Best Actor at NSFC and NYFCC jointly for his work in Moneyball and The Tree of Life—he never would have won a leading trophy for only his supporting work in the latter, but the critics upgraded it to lead for it to tag along as part of his body of work for the year that they were kind of already acknowledging.

Looks like I should have included a “none” option.  NSFC has not chimed in yet of course, but despite Adam Driver winning nineteen awards so far, nobody has cited The Report, which has been getting Annette Bening nominations.  Nobody has upgraded Brad Pitt from supporting (as he should be anyway) to include Ad Astra, which has been getting cinematography nominations. Margot Robbie has been jointly cited with Once Upon a Time in Hollywood once when she won St. Louis and Laura Dern has been jointly cited with Little Women once when she won New York. Scarlett Johansson has been double-nominated by many groups, but none combined them into a joint win or nomination slot.
