I know I did a poll on this topic before, but I was bothered by the fact that 1917 kept showing as 0 for some reason. So I’m gonna see if spelling it out makes any difference. I’m not gonna repeat what I said on the previous version of this poll, except for what I said at the end: my stance on what came second comes with the belief that Bong Joon-Ho would’ve still won Best Director even if Parasite somehow didn’t win Best Picture.
ReplyFebruary 20, 2020 at 12:47 pm #1203354071But how about a hot take for the sake of it: if my belief that Bong Joon-Ho was gonna win Director no matter what is true, then 1917 would be disadvantaged even more as all it had going for it by the time the winner of Best Director was announced was three technical awards, not exactly encouraging for its Best Picture hopes, especially with Sam Mendes losing Best Director. So again, if Parasite for some whatever reason lost Best Picture, then the runner-up would ideally be a movie that’s won a major award, which is how it’s always been. By that logic, Once Upon a Time and Jojo Rabbit would both be in a better position than 1917 as Once Upon a Time won the two awards it was expected to win including Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt and was a strong contender for Original Screenplay (even if it didn’t win), while Jojo Rabbit won Adapted Screenplay. And every Best Picture since 2009 has won either actor and director, actor and screenplay, director and screenplay, all three of those awards, or just screenplay, and with the exception of Spotlight, at least three awards in total. So that’s a further expansion on my point of view and reasoning. Feel free to debate! Also, how do you delete a forum or poll you’ve created?

Gut feeling
1. Parasite
2. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
3. 1917
4. Joker (A lot of low, a lot of high)
5. Marriage Story (In preferential, not sure this would have gotten a lot of super low or super high scores)
6. Jojo Rabbit (This may have gotten the most last place votes of any Best Picture nominee due to controversy, but it had its fans.)
7. Little Women (Hot take – this might have done a little higher than this. It probably missed out on top 5 due to non-linear structural choices being divisive, but other than that, it did well)
8. The Irishman (voters be like )
9. Ford V Ferrari (No passion there, sorry. There are films with more last place scores, undoubtedly, but those also had defenders.)ReplyCopy URLFor Your Consideration:

01. Parasite
02. 1917
03. Jojo Rabbit
04. Once Upon a Time In Hollywood
05. Joker
06. The Irishman
07. Marriage Story
08. Ford v Ferrari
09. Little Women

It is same as lincoln that won actor and pd. Argo won BP and Life of Pit won Best Director. That would put Lincoln 3rd at best.

First of all, Argo wasn’t even nominated for Director and Parasite won both Picture and Director, and as for Lincoln, Spielberg already had a Best Picture winner before so there was no need to give him another. Plus, Lincoln wasn’t nearly as passionate a film as Once Upon a Time. As for 1917, assuming that Bong Joon-Ho would’ve still won Director even if Parasite somehow didn’t win Best Picture, for 1917 to win Best Picture with nothing but three technical awards would be preposterous, to say nothing of everywhere else it missed that undermined its Best Picture chances and that Grand Hotel rule that’s remained unbreakable for 87 years. Jojo Rabbit meanwhile missed a BAFTA Film nomination (there’s possibly wiggle room for that rule, but it hasn’t failed since Million Dollar Baby) and just four years ago Spotlight did something no Best Picture winner had done since 1952: win Best Picture and only one other award. It’s unlikely it would’ve happened again just four years later. Once Upon a Time had never missed any crucial nominations throughout the season except for Editing at the Oscars (something that is not an infallible stat). Also, the leaked ballots that were revealed days before the Oscars showed that most of the votes that didn’t go for Parasite were going with Once Upon a Time. Plus, it’s about Hollywood and has a narrative that voters can identify with. And if voters didn’t care about the way Nazis were portrayed in Jojo or the whole controversy surrounding Green Book last year, I doubt they’d care about the whole controversy surrounding Once Upon a Time. Fanboys can be blinded for sure, but they can also use logic and outside information on their hands to come to their own conclusions. But we can just agree to disagree I suppose.

There is literally zero evidence of this. Just because you want something to happen doesnt mean that it actually did.

I love how you’re quick to write off anyone who remotely sticks up for OUATIH as a blinded butthurt fanboy.

Where do you think Jojo Rabbit ranked in the final run, and how much do you think its failure to earn a BAFTA Film nomination hurt its chances?

Probably 4th. I think the fact that it didn’t win any major precursors until WGA really hurt it, especially since until then Little Women was the frontrunner to win Adapted Screenplay. It also seemed to be a very love-it-or-hate-it film based on the leaked ballots: which is kind of what we expected after the early controversy it had. 1917, Once, and Parasite were definetely the films with the most momentum this season, but Jojo seemed like the closest after those 3.

What was the early controversy JoJo had?
