What action pictures were there out of curiosity?
off the top of my head, joker and mad max and dune at least; franchise-y films are especially prone to having utter stan devotion. thus zack snyder’s 2 fan voted twitter things.

If the father got into PGA it would have won over nomadland and won best picture
ReplyCopy URLMarch 31, 2022 at 1:36 pm #1204891792Yeah I do think that Father/Billboards, and beaten-by-even-more-audience-faves 1917/Bohemian Rhapsody, are likely runners-up.
ReplyCopy URLApril 2, 2022 at 9:51 pm #1204895135I just noticed the cheers and applause on Sian Heder’s Screenplay win and saw that the crafts members gave her a standing ovation (while the actors didn’t) which I’m putting out here to debunk the the myth that crafts voters won’t vote for CODA. They don’t just vote for what movie has crafts. Else Dune would have won Best Picture.
Add some of these people are actually international voters.
But not, here in GD forum people said:
-Highbrown and arthouse films can’t have the audience approval
-The International and craft are cartoonish robots which can’t bring emotions. That stats are a thing of the past lol. What remains confusing to me is why this supposedly newer and younger Academy who clearly (and rightfully) don’t care about yielding to tradition still made many basic and predictable decisions.
Because being newer and younger voters don’t mean being woke hipsters who loved bleak films no one likes like some members here are looking.
Younger voters are PEOPLE. And people watch amusing films. Bleak films with unlikeable characters ALWAYS struggle in general audience.
Srly, what’s so hard to understand AMPAS voters are people? Sofia Coppola loves Daddy Day Camp, Jake Gyllenhaal’s favourite movie is Jerry Maguire, Tom Holland doesn’t know who’s Pedro Almodovar… Jeez. This discussion feels like talking with a wall.

People also take “younger” very literally. Younger for AMPAS probably means (broadly) 35-40 not 20-25.

I agree but I love Pedro Almodóvar. Tom Holland is an idiot and he said that several times in Spain. Like it’s funny you don’t know who Pedro Almodóvar is

Yes, and this leads to evident misjudgment about the sweep of the Ampas voting body, and the potential Oscar outcomes.

Indeed. Though this year it seems the Daniels film is already a frontrunner for both “audience awards” if they are revived next time.

LOL, did he say that? Source please? Not that I am surprised… 🤣
I think there are SOME new members who are shaking AMPAS, or we wouldn’t have had “Drive My Car” with 4 nominations (which really surprised me), TWPITW in screenplay, Penélope Cruz in actress, “Roma” with acting nominations, etc but they’re a minority. They can get nominations but for wins you need support from everyone in the Academy, especially from those 70-year-old cranky white men who think “Parasite” doesn’t belong in Best Picture because it’s not American or that Jane Campion can’t do a Western because she’s a “woman from down there”.

Unless you are parasite or get out level of accalaim the Academy always default to the safe choice , king speech and Argo would still have won today 🤷
They gave moonlight best picture thou so I give them credit for that
