Now that veteran character actor J.K. Simmons has finally gotten his due after years of amazing work, what character actor or actress do you think will eventually get his or her due in the near future? Here are a few I’d love to see.
Judy Greer: She’s an effortless scene stealer that makes everything she is in much better.
Ben Mendelsohn: In my opinion, he is the best character actor currently working it. Even though he tends to be typecasted as crooks and/or lowlifes, he still creates a different characterization of each role, pulling off 180 after 180.
How about you folks? Which unsung heroes would you love to see finally get called to the podium? Let’s discuss.August 20, 2015 at 5:00 pm #192273
Yeah, Ben Mendelsohn and Judy Greer are two of the few that came to my mind straight away. I’d also like to add their past co-stars Kyle Chandler and Bobby Cannavale as they also have done consistently strong work.
Patricia Clarkson is another I can see having her moment. Stanley Tucci, Brendan Gleeson and Imelda Staunton too.August 20, 2015 at 6:12 pm #192274
Amy Ryan. She was unbelievable in Gone Baby Gone, which snagged her a nomination. I could see her bringing home the trophy one of these days.August 20, 2015 at 6:57 pm #192275
Kathy Bates for a second Oscar.
Viola Davis for a first. I hope CCH Pounder, Alfre Woodard, and S Epatha Merkerson will have their moment.
Danny Glover is overdue and should be recognized with an honoray award.August 20, 2015 at 7:02 pm #192276
I doubt she ever will, but I desperately hope Kathryn Hahn at least gets a nomination at some point (although a win would be ideal). She’s a brilliant comedic actress.August 20, 2015 at 7:36 pm #192277
I would love to see the great and often overlooked Edie McClurg finally get some notice from any awards show. She is a fantastic comedic actress, who is often able to steal enitre scenes with one line… Among her film credits include, “Ferris Buellers Day Off”, “Planes, Trains & Automobiles”, “She’s Having A Baby”, “Natural Born Killers” and many others.
Perhaps she is best known for her TV work where she has had numerous guest and recurring roles, particuarly in sitcoms such as “Small Wonder”, “The Hogan Family”, “7th Heaven”, “WKRP in Cinnicnatti” and “Madame’s Place” to name a few.August 20, 2015 at 10:35 pm #192278
I think I’d just be satisfied seeing Judy Greer be given a feature film role that doesn’t involve just showing up for two scenes as somebody’s mom.August 20, 2015 at 10:40 pm #192279
Donald Sutherland!August 21, 2015 at 1:38 am #192280
Impossible to know but I would love to see Kathryn Han get some awards glory.August 21, 2015 at 3:59 am #192281
John Goodman. There will eventually be a performance by him where it will be absolutely undeniable that he deserves to win. Probably a Coen Brothers film.

I agree with Judy Greer. She is highly capable she just needs a juicy role. I would have love to see her nominated for The Descendants but 2011 was a packed year that even her co star Shailene couldn’t get in. Kathryn Hahn is also a fantastic choice. Molly Shannon has started to fit the character actor placement these past few years. She gets a lot of mom roles and scene stealers but never any great leading roles anymore. If someone gave Molly Shannon a role like JK Simmons’ in Whiplash, she would totally knock it out of the park.September 4, 2015 at 9:11 pm #192286
Lizzy Caplan? now that she’s proven herself as a dramatic actress with “Masters of Sex” I think she’ll be able to make the leap to dramatic film fairly easy in the next few years and hopefully even take it all the way to Oscar.
