I was inspired by a similar post around which show or performer was in second place to a win this decade at the Emmys. What fascinates me about this hypothesis more is which films were in sixth place at the Globes and BAFTAs due to the fact that sometimes films in the top 5 of the GoldDerby odds are films that missed out for Best Film or Motion Picture at the BAFTAs and Globes.

    Post your own hypotheses below!

    2020
6th Place BAFTA – Jojo Rabbit
6th Place DGA – Todd Phillips, Joker
6th Place Globes (Motion Picture Comedy) – Booksmart
6th Place Globes (Motion Picture Drama) – Bombshell/Little Women
10th Place Oscars – Knives Out
    11th Place PGA – Bombshell
6th Place SAG (Ensemble) – Little Women
6th Place WGA (Original Screenplay) – Lulu Wang, The Farewell
6th Place WGA (Adapted Screenplay) – Anthony McCarten, The Two Popes

    2019
6th Place BAFTA – Bohemian Rhapsody
6th Place DGA – Yorgos Lanthimos, The Favourite
6th Place Globes (Motion Picture Comedy) – Eighth Grade
6th Place Globes (Motion Picture Drama) – First Man
9th Place Oscars – First Man
11th Place PGA – If Beale Street Could Talk
6th Place SAG (Ensemble) – The Favourite
6th Place WGA (Original Screenplay) – First Reformed
6th Place WGA (Adapted Screenplay) – First Man

    2018
    6th Place BAFTA – I, Tonya
6th Place DGA – Paul Thomson Anderson, Phantom Thread
6th Place Globes (Motion Picture Comedy) – Baby Driver
6th Place Globes (Motion Picture Drama) – All The Money in the World
    10th Place Oscars – I, Tonya
12th Place PGA – Baby Driver
    6th Place SAG (Ensemble) – I, Tonya
6th Place WGA (Original Screenplay) – Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri
    6th Place WGA (Adapted Screenplay) – ?

    Will post 2011-17 later.

FYC OSCARS : VANESSA KIRBY FOR "PIECES OF A WOMAN", GLENN CLOSE FOR "HILLBILLY ELEGY", ANTHONY HOPKINS FOR "THE FATHER", CHADWICK BOSEMAN FOR "MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM", PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY).

6th Place SAG (Ensemble) – Little Women 6th Place WGA (Original Screenplay) – Lulu Wang, The Farewell

SAG 6th place was probably Marriage Story. Yes it underperformed the whole season, but it was treated miles better at SAG than LW.

    Farewell was ineligible at WGA.

Unfortunately, The Two Popes was probably tenth at the Oscars this year.

Two Popes went Original at WGA, probably why it missed the nom. Also it was clearly the 10th place at the Oscars, Knives Out didnt make a splash

Chromatica and Fetch the Bolt Cutters AOTYs yeah

More of a specific category, but I think Booksmart was sixth for Original Screenplay this year and not The Farewell like many believed. The Farewell’s campaign was kind of dropped by A24 as soon as Uncut Gems started getting popular, and I think it just ended up being too indie for a lot of awards voters. However, Booksmart got WGA and BAFTA nods, so I think that one may have been closer than we might have believed. BAFTA being especially significant just because that’s really so far from the thing they usually go for (American, comedy, geared to teen audiences), so I think it had a decent amount of support.

I’d say If Beale Street Could Talk probably came 9th at the Oscars: acting win + screenplay nomination seem stronger than First Man, which had lost a lot of steam in the leadup to nominations
