Did the HFPA make an announcement that they are not giving out the Cecille Demille Award this year or what happened? I never can remember a year where there has been no announcement prior to the nominees being released. Is there any precedent for this? Maybe they are not giving it out this year or with all the controversy in Hollywood/society maybe they are going to give it to the “all the women who have spoken out to change hollywood” or they are not going to give out this individual award in order to honor that.
Let me know if anyone has any insight on this.December 12, 2017 at 6:45 pm #1202438295
Maybe the award is retired.December 12, 2017 at 7:18 pm #1202438302
Oh no… that was my bathroom break.December 12, 2017 at 7:55 pm #1202438324
Have any of the Gold Derby experts heard anything from the HFPA? I mean this is supposedly their big lifetime achievement award and seemingly nobody has even mentioned it. It is especially odd considering they normally announce the winner in November or even sometimes earlier.December 12, 2017 at 11:51 pm #1202438408
Maybe the award is retired.
That would be so random when they had so much press because of the winner last year. Someone else mentioned that maybe someone like Spacey was their pick and all the reports changed it.
Yes, I made mention of this in the Golden Globe thread. I really hope they haven’t retired when there are so many more deserving recipients out there!December 13, 2017 at 12:54 am #1202438445
This defeaning silence is bizarre. If they’d retired the trophy or decided to skip it this year, they would surely have said so, no? I feel like they actually might have chosen Hoffman or Spacey (or even someone else whose case hasn’t yet gone public but they learned of), had to cancel at the last minute, and are now feverishly trying to come up with a new recipient.December 13, 2017 at 6:06 am #1202438623
They might use that DeMille time in the telecast to do a big diamond anniversary tribute montage instead, except that it’s already going to be a standalone special. Both could easily be accommodated for too, so the silence is indeed strange. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if their first choice was Spacey.December 13, 2017 at 6:12 am #1202438628
I am also wondering if they were waiting for the nominations to come out to pick someone because last year Meryl was also nominated? So many people who should get this award also had a chance of being nominated (Hanks, Lange, Keaton, Howard, Fonda).December 13, 2017 at 6:22 am #1202438646
I’m also wondering if we might find out this year’s recipient during the anniversary special tonight.December 13, 2017 at 8:48 am #1202439037
Oh yeah i thought they were announcing it on nomination day but no news on it has surfacedDecember 13, 2017 at 9:01 am #1202439068
The complete silence though seems weird. If they were going to have a surprise winner during the show, you would think there would already have been some type of announcement already about this in order to promote it. The show is less than a month away so it all seems very strange.
Maybe Spacey was the choice although even that would be a little odd considering he only won a golden globe once in his career and that just happened recently. True the HFPA is wacky, but it would seem like a really odd choice for them considering they never seemed to really embrace him enough to give him awards. It will be interesting to see if the news gets out if in fact Spacey was the initial choice.
Does anyone know if anyone in the HFPA has actually been directly asked about this? It would be interesting to see how they respond at this late stage. It would be a good scoop if Gold Derby could find out the answer, especially if the answer is that they originally picked Spacey.December 13, 2017 at 9:27 am #1202439117
I’m hoping it means they are working with someone like Maggie Smith or Doris Day to show upDecember 13, 2017 at 9:53 am #1202439174

I’m not sure why journalists who cover Hollywood aren’t doing their job and asking the HFPA about this. If and when someone finally makes that phone call, they should also ask whether Jada Pinkett Smith is correct claiming that Girls Trip didn’t get a screening.December 13, 2017 at 10:43 am #1202439286
Yeah its odd that I have not seen any journalists covering the event ask about this or even mention it. I think a lot of us thought that it would be announced with the nominations but when nothing was announced then, it really seems like the time to start pressing them on this.
If they do have the award this year, it seems now almost certain that it will be somebody with a very wholesome image (aka, Julie Andrews, Tom Hanks). I think a female is also now also becoming increasingly more likely.
