For every year since the expansion to nominees (2009) list what YOU think would have been the 5 nominated for best picture each year.

Well we need to remember that films have a different momentum on nominations morning than on the day of the actual ceremony. Neither CODA nor The Father would have made Best Picture in a field of 5 on nominations morning but would definitely have on the day of the ceremony.  Considering here we’re talking of nominations morning:

    • 2009:
      • The Hurt Locker
      • Avatar
      • Inglorious Basterds
      • Precious
      • Up in the Air

    Easy locked five.

    • 2010:
      • The King’s Speech
      • The Social Network
      • True Grit
      • Black Swan
      • The Fighter

Inception would be the big snub. Nolan and the Editing misses are enough to say it would have been hurt by the genre bias.

    • 2011:
      • The Artist
      • The Descendants
      • Hugo
      • Midnight in Paris
      • Moneyball

Yeah makes me think this would be the five. Moneyball being the 5th one.

    • 2012:
      • Argo
      • Zero Dark Thirty
      • Life of Pi
      • Lincoln
      • Silver Linings Playbook

An easy five. No way Django would have been the 5th one with the rise of Silver Linings Playbook and with the technical support of Life Of Pi.

    • 2013:
      • 12 Years a Slave
      • American Hustle
      • Gravity
      • Nebraska
      • The Wolf of Wall Street

    Easy five.

    • 2014:
      • Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)
      • Boyhood
      • The Grand Budapest Hotel
      • The Imitation Game
      • American Sniper

Considering the late surge of support, American Sniper would have gotten a surprise nomination. Whiplash peaked later after nominations.

    • 2015:
      • Spotlight
      • The Big Short
      • Mad Max: Fury Road
      • The Revenant
      • The Martian / Room

Either The Martian or Room would have been the fifth one.

    • 2016:
      • Moonlight
      • Arrival
      • Hacksaw Ridge / Lion
      • La La Land
      • Manchester by the Sea

Either Lion or Hacksaw Ridge would have been No.5

    • 2017:
      • The Shape of Water
      • Dunkirk
      • Get Out
      • Lady Bird
      • Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

    Easy five.

    • 2018:
      • Green Book
      • BlacKkKlansman
      • Bohemian Rhapsody
      • The Favourite
      • Roma

I really want to put Vice in but in place of what?

    • 2019:
      • Parasite
      • The Irishman
      • Joker
      • 1917
      • Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

    Easy five.

    • 2020:
      • Nomadland
      • The Trial Of The Chicago 7
      • Mank
      • Minari
      • Promising Young Woman

Easy five at this stage although wouldn’t be surprised if after 10 days, The Father would have replaced Trial.

    • 2021:
      • King Richard
      • Belfast
      • Dune
      • The Power of the Dog
      • West Side Story

King Richard would have easily made in considering it got all the major nominations it needed. CODA had no shot at this stage and West Side Story would have been No.5

    • 2022:
      • Everything Everywhere All At Once
      • All Quiet On The Western Front
      • Top Gun: Maverick
      • The Banshees of Inisherin

    All Quiet being No.5

I agree with pretty much all of this. I’d say The Martian would get in over Room; it’s more mainstream so would have more votes from producers, publicists and members at large, as well as more below-the-line support. (Room weirdly wasn’t even nominated for PGA). Hacksaw vs. Lion is a real head-scratcher; I’m slightly inclined towards the former but only just. I also don’t think it’s unquestionable that Arrival could’ve missed out.

You could be right about Fabelmans making it in.
I’m happy they expanded to 10, when I think of films like WT and almost every other film missing out.

    All Quiet being No.5

    great picks!

the reason I had Inception in over Black Swan was because I thought the genre bias would hurt BS and Inception pulled a screenplay nom.

I had Django over ZDT only because Django ended up winning screenplay and supporting actor, and I know there was a pushback against ZDT for the whole torture propaganda or whatever

I also considered American Sniper but I was being optimistic and hoping Whiplash would make it off of BAFTA support for Chazelle

I picked The Martian just because of the overall visibility over Room

I picked Hacksaw because of Gibson name checking and It performed well with wins later on

And I was actually considering dropping Mank for Trial instead of the Father, idk I just felt like it was overall passionless
