Emily Watson has famously turned down lead roles in:
– Amelie
– Elizabeth
– The Hours
– Bridget Jones Diary
– Gangs of New YorkThose roles earned the actresses lots of fame, Oscar nominations, 1 win and other awards
What kind of career would Emily Watson have had if she had said yes? Would we now, as of yesterday, been talking about “Oscar winner Emily Watson?”
Your thoughts?

Good lord, I never knew that she turned down so many famous roles?!!

None of those films have performances that can touch her in Breaking The Waves, but, those are huge roles.

I mean she has a pretty solid career on TV now with Chernobyl and Apple Tree Yard, so its not like her career lost out in the end.

ReplyCopy URLThe Oscar needs to get rid of the preferential ballot so it can name a deserving movie as Best Picture again.

Watson gave one of the greatest performances ever!

I was only aware she turned down Amelie, Elizabeth and Gangs of New York so thanks for bringing these to my attention. Particularly intrigued who she’d be playing in The Hours.
I really wish Hollywood would wake up and give her another plum role, Chernobyl was at least a nice reminder of her presence. The same goes for Samantha Morton and Miranda Richardson!

The world would be a much better place today. Frances McDormand would still have two other Oscars on her mantlepiece.

– Amelie
Watson is not french so she would be big miscast. Tautou was perfect and yet she was not nominated
– Elizabeth
Cate Blanchett was perfect and if she couldn’t beat Paltrow…
– The Hours
Maybe if she got Kidman’s role but that was a very strong year for Best Actress. Moore got critics, Zellweger SAG and GG too. Kidman was on a roll so I think with any other actress playing Woolf, Zellweger or Moore would have prevailed.
– Bridget Jones Diary
Zellweger was perfect. I can see a nomination for Watson but not a win.
– Gangs of New York
I have heard many actress were up for this role. Diaz was a miscast but that was a tough year for s.actress. Maybe a nom but not a win.She should have won for Breaking The Waves for sure.
The only oscar winning role I can see her playing and winning too is Tilda’s Michael Clayton.
