Could her overdue narrative overtake Zellweger?

Zellweger already has an Oscar unlike Olivia Colman.

Close has been a real trooper showing up to present at the Globes and SAG. She may have wanted to hide out after last year. I noticed they introduced her on the Globes as the star of Hillbilly Elegy. The campaign has begun!

Depends on how The Wife is marketed- if they released it in November or so, I think Close could have won last year.

She will 100% lose without any doubt.

If they had released it in Nov. of 2017 I think she could have beat McDormand.

I think a lot of what Glenn Close had against her was the fact that she was The Wife’s sole nomination. If The Wife had received more nominations, I think she would have had a bigger chance at winning.

That being said, I am rooting for Hillbilly Elegy to do well later this year!

I think Close could’ve been extremely competitive this year, she clearly gained a lot of support throughout the season, and this year with no real competition she could’ve given a good fight to Zellweger. The race would have come down to if people preferred Zellweger playing Judy Garland or Close being so overdue.

renee is being touted as having the performance this year (something I disagree with but whatever), which is what ultimately gave colman the upper hand. this year it seems like narrative + early hype works better than a late-breaking great performance, overdue vs. comeback, I’d say overdue wins

If they had released it in Nov. of 2017 I think she could have beat McDormand.

doubt it, that was a year when streep in a spielberg vehicle had to get in at the fifth slot

That argument gets complicated with the recent win by Julianne Moore, who had same situation, but I still think you are absolutely right.

She would still lose. A bitter pill to swallow but she was in the best season to be competitive.

She’s got two films. Four Days and Nights and Hillbilly Elegy. Hillbilly Elegy seems like the more viable option but who knows. In any event she can only be nominated for one.

I think she could’ve won this year. I mean I thought she was definitely winning last year, so who really knows? But yeah, in my mind, she could take down Zellweger. So could Colman, McDormand, Moore, and others. Besides the performance, I think Zellweger is winning because there’s nobody else and somebody told Johansson and her team “you’re not winning” and they left it at that and her campaign (if there ever was one) was dropped. Netflix looks like they also let go of Marriage Story and focused solely on Dern from that film, an actress who came into the campaign with half the work it takes to win already done anyway.

But yeah, Glenn Close could’ve been super competitive this year. If she took down Gaga at the Globes, for example, she could’ve taken Zellweger there too. And the at SAG it would’ve been an easy win.

Yeah, I think Glenn would’ve won this year. Renee wouldn’t have beaten the overdue narrative.

Renee’s performance is a juggernaut that Colman’s never was.

Is it really? She benefits from having no strong alternatives. Olivia Colman won critics and resonated with the industry along with being in a Best Picture nominee, something that was really hard for Glenn to beat. She was also competing for her first Oscar while Renee is getting her 2nd.
