What if Matt Damon had gone Supporting Actor for Ford v. Ferrari? He kinda fell away because Christian Bale took all of FvF‘s oxygen for Actor. But could he have stolen some award nominations if he had a category to himself?

Maybe, but I don’t think so. He was great, and a lead going into supporting categories often yields favorable results, but the category was very strong with all the men nominated either being leads or large supporting roles.
Bale going supporting might have been a different story, as his role and performance were more showy. I admire the studio for campaigning them both in lead, as they’re truly complete equals in Ford v Ferrari.

That movie seemed with the Oscars to have more going for it in the technical branches (rightly so) than anything. I don’t see it working if he went supporting with that bench.

I don’t think he would’ve even made any precursors. Like maybe SAG?

But I will always admire Bale and Damon for going Leading.

No idea how Matt Damon got top billing with Christian Bale being the star that he is, with more screen time and a showier role. Anyway, Damon was going nowhere regardless of placement. He was fine of course as you would at least expect from him, but it was an unmemorable performance with unremarkable material.

In a weaker year when Bale could have made it in lead actor, it might have been possible for Damon to coattail a nomination in supporting actor. There’s precedent established with Freeman and “Invictus” for that. But Bale didn’t happen even with Damon as non-competition in lead actor, so I don’t think much heat would have materialized for Damon in supporting actor placement. Everyone settled in on Hanks, Hopkins, Pacino, Pesci, & Pitt. That was that, pretty much.

In the best case, he could have replaced Hanks as the fifth nominee. The other four were locks and had much more passion than him.
Happy he went lead though. Not just because that’s where he belonged but also because he was rightfully snubbed.

I never knew how to pronounce this title. Some people say Ford versus Ferrari and others just say Ford V Ferrari.

    Still wouldn’t have gotten in.

Competition too packed and unremarkable performance.

I don’t think so. Damon’s performance never generated any heat. Damon just didn’t get the material to get a Nomination.

Would’ve been cool though if Pitt, Damon and DiCaprio all got nominated in one year.

I just love movies. And awards.
