On Sunday, the BAFTA will be handing out their annual awards. I am posting below some what if scenarios and you tell if your current Best Picture or Best Screenplay favorite will change.

Scenario #1 – The Shape of Water wins Picture and Original Screenplay.

Who wins Best Picture and Original Screenplay?

Scenario #2 – The Shape of Water wins Best Picture, but Get Out wins Original Screenplay.

Who wins Best Picture and Original Screenplay?

Scenario #3 – Three Billboards wins Picture, but Get Out wins Best Original Screenplay.

Who wins Best Who wins Best Picture and Original Screenplay?

Scenario #4– Three Billboards wins Best Picture and Original Screenplay.

Who wins Best Picture and Original Screenplay?

Scenario #5– The Shape of Water wins Picture, but Three Billboards wins Original Screenplay.

Who wins Best Who wins Best Picture and Original Screenplay?

Scenario #6 – Three Billboards wins Best Picture, but The Shape of Water wins Best Original Screenplay.

Who wins Best Who wins Best Picture and Original Screenplay?

I sort of don’t think BAFTAS really affect voting that much. They are on a TV channel many people don’t follow regularly, they don’t get much press here in the US and the show tends to be a little dull especially if you aren’t British and don’t get all of the inside jokes.

and that BAFTA fellowship always being hailed as the major award…..yawn.

That is not how it works.

Scenario #1 – The Shape of Water wins Picture and Original Screenplay.

Scenario #2 – The Shape of Water wins Best Picture, but Get Out wins Original Screenplay.

Both of these would foreshadow the same outcomes at the Oscars.

Scenario #3 – Three Billboards wins Picture, but Get Out wins Best Original Screenplay.

    Get Out wins screenplay.

Scenario #4 – Three Billboards wins Best Picture and Original Screenplay.

This is the most likely scenario, so would result in no learning.

Scenario #5 – The Shape of Water wins Picture, but Three Billboards wins Original Screenplay.

The Shape of Water wins picture.

Scenario #6 – Three Billboards wins Best Picture, but The Shape of Water wins Best Original Screenplay.

Phantom Thread wins picture and The Big Sick screenplay.

There’s another scenario that you haven’t covered ; DUNKIRK wins both BP and BD ! Patriotism can do strange things with the voter’s minds … after all , the war looms large in the British psyche !

In that situation , 3 Bills would win BBF

PS/ there’s an interesting link on the BAFTA thread from some Bafta voters who are predicting just that …they have a spotty prediction record over the last 3 years but they do seem to get the main categories right !

Sounds like Boyhood redux (ignore for Oscar predictions).

Correct. Dunkirk winning here doesn’t change the narrative for picture and screenplay. It puts Dunkirk in the wildcard spot, but it’s still THREE BILLBOARDS vs. THE SHAPE OF WATER on Oscar night for Best Picture. I do see Dunkirk performing well in the technical categories.

That’s not the point. The point here is that BAFTA members vote on the Academy awards. They are an industry award.

In all those scenarios: Get Out wins both at the Oscars.

SOME BAFTA members vote on the Oscars. I miss the days when they marched to their own drummer and gave the statues out post-Oscars. I’ve heard Jamie Lee Curtis say she was just baffled by her whole nomination and win for Trading Places as Best Supporting Actress.

    Something to think about:
Moonlight, Zero BAFTAs – Best Picture Oscar
Spotlight, Only one BAFTA (Screenplay) – Best Picture Oscar
Birdman, Only one BAFTA (Cinematography) – Best Picture Oscar

Whatever your favorite film is this year, if it doesn’t do well at BAFTA this weekend, don’t fret. It still has a chance at the Oscars.
