In a possible post-Parasite future where the Academy Awards aligns its taste towards more avant-garde or international features, awarding its top prizes to such cinemas and performances. Will it increase the Academy’s prestige? Would you love the Oscars more?

If this means that the Oscars become the Indie Film Critic’s awards again, then no, because great movies like Jojo Rabbit and Joker would never be nominated. And we’d get a whole slew of forgettable Picture winners again. But if it means that they actually nominate great foreign films like Parasite that deserve awards, then I’m all for it.

Darling, you’re definitely delusionally nuts. Hypocrites from the Academy rewarded Paramess but there’s no way it becomes as prestigious as Cannes. Unclassy and disgusting films like Clownery, Jojo Rubbish or Testosterone would never win there. Even Once and Always Trash in Hollywood was shut out from its awards (as it deserved). I have to laugh, dear citizens.

agree, but that’s too prestigious of you to say. They are art, so stop trying to knock off someone artistic viewpoints when I’m pretty sure you could even do it yourself. Thanks man !

See, I think a bunch of awards-focused companies are going to be very invested in this Cannes… but plain and simple, Parasite is the sort of aligning of the planets that doesn’t come super often.

Parasite is a pretty accessible film, has a lot of crowd-pleasing moments, has a great ensemble (this is KEY, remember how much of the Oscars voter base is acting branch) and has something to chew on. It has narratives for awards built in. Again, not every year is going to have a Parasite level crossover. Though, if a bunch of studios put a lot of money into marketing and distributing quality international cinema in trying to achieve that, everybody wins.

parasite is a complete anomaly in that it’s a local blockbuster, it’s as ready for popcorn consumption as it is for snobby examination. if anything I’m worried that cannes could go down the path venice has in recent years and start rewarding films that could more easily cross over to the academy’s voting body

I do think PARASITE will continue to remain an exception to the rule. I’d like to think that more foreign films will continue to get recognized but I also feel like we will just as easily get more GREEN BOOKs and CRASHs mixed up with the PARASITEs and MOONLIGHTs…but the fact that those films, along with THE SHAPE OF WATER, pulled it off does show tides are turning somewhat.

… I think you’re proving Thatcher’s point. Joker would never win Cannes, but of course would do well at Venice, where the American media industry has increasing control.

But that is where my actual question lies. What if the Academy Awards become as prestigious as Cannes by stop rewarding unclassy and disgusting movies. By become less of a precursor sheep and their own body of opinion.

I think people will be shocked when another Parasite doesn’t happen for years. Parasite is the first foreign-language film when I asked myself, “There is no way this isn’t going to win the Oscar.” It’s just too pleasing to watch and I don’t know anyone who hasn’t liked the film. That simply doesn’t happen.
