What if there was a “Best Actor in a Minor Role” Category?

Let me say that I do not think that this category is necessary for the Oscars, though it might be a welcome addition in SAG, a ceremony created to celebrate actors of all kinds. A category devoted to tiny-yet-memorable roles could even compensate (slightly) for how borderline Lead the Supporting categories have become.

What actors do you think would be worthy winners or nominees? In recent years, Lakeith Stanfield (Get Out) and Margaret Bowman (Hell or High Water) are the firsts to come to mind. If I were to look at someone from 2020, I might consider Alfred Molina in Promising Young Woman.

Who from recent or classic films would you deem worthy of recognition in a category for minor roles?

I hate frauds. This year the biggest fraud was the 2 biggest black actors in Supporting. That’s like Denzel and Russell Crowe from AMERICAN GANGSTER in Supporting. Or De Niro and Pacino from HEAT in Supporting

Interesting that you referred to them with that descriptor. It’s almost as if… naah.

Im sure you had the same exact problems with pacino, pitt and hanks last year. 🙂

If I like a small role too much I don’t mind considering it among the larger supporting roles tbh.

Three good ones from recent years that haven’t been mentioned:
• Laura Linney, Nocturnal Animals
• Alfre Woodard, 12 Years a Slave
• Aunjanue Ellis, If Beale Street Could Talk
