Meh, I doubt women being attractive would be such a huge factor against beloved male performers in big roles. DD-L would’ve still won over Jennifer Lawrence no matter what, I believe.

In my alternative selection of winners, women win 4 out of 12 years in Lead. I think them winning only a third of the time is a realistic assessment of how it would play. Hollywood, and especially old Hollywood (like academy voters) still see men as more talented and as a bigger deal in the industry. The “babe” factor would make a lot of them competitive, but would still not be enough for the most part, I think.

I think the tricky thing is to assume it would be the same winners as normal years. For example, let’s say Lupita wins this year. Would she win in a combined line-up? And I don’t even mean against the male contenders, but against the female competition. Look at my alternative line-up, neither Roberts or Lawrence would have won Lead by this year. This means they would be both overdue. Which would make me predict Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle even if Lupita wins in reality. See my point? The factors of deciding the winners would probably change a lot in a combined field.

Well, that’s easy. If there was no seperation to the categories, the lead acting races would be stocked with male performances. This question should be asked once at least half of the Best Picture contenders are female driven, and half of the movies made from a higher budget are also female driven. As of now, only two of the likely BP nominees are female driven (Gravity and maybe SMB), with A:OC, Philomena standing an outside shot. (Last year we also had only two movies with female leads: ZDT and Beasts.) As for the high budget movies: there were 3 female-driven movies in total this year that were made from more than 100 million dollars out of 29(!). And none of these 3 were even in the Top 10 budget-wise. (They all made the Top 10 box office charts though.)

So sure, it’s interesting scenario-wise. But Hollywood is far from ready for this to be considered a possibility.
