What is it going to take to show some of you that “superhero” is not a genre of film? The Oscars have repeatedly shown they are willing to nominate sci-fi and fantasy and adventure. There are other reasons Marvel films are scant nominees.

One of the following will be nominated for Best Picture:

    • Avengers: Endgame
    • Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker
    • Cats

I also think Richard Jewell can make it.

    FYC:

    CATS.

It’s not in my predictions yet, but based on how often y’all predict things solely based on the names attached months before they come out, Richard Jewell should not be as low as it is. Without knowing how it will be received, I would say it’s a safer bet than something generalized as a “crowdpleaser” like Just Mercy or ABDITN.

Hustlers lol it’s critically acclaimed, buzzy and JLo will also be nominated. And it’s getting a SAG nom for best ensemble aswell.

Darlings, this. You’re blind if Hustlers isn’t fighting for a spot.

I’m with Brayden and ginnala – Hustlers is my bold pick and potentially Queen & Slim should it be a hit with critics.

I think Hustlers is going to be the underdog this year that goes all the way. It’ll pick up noms at the Globes, PGA, SAG, and Critics Choice (maybe even WGA too), and people will keep underestimating it, but I think it’ll end up nabbing that Best Picture nom.

EDIT: Just looked it up and it’s (barely) eligible for the Spirit Awards! So I’d expect to see it pop up there as well.

I have Pain and Glory in 10th. I think it will have many fans in the Academy rather than the umpteenth remake and 2 milquetoast films.

Pain and Glory has a shot given how good it is, how well it’s been received and how the academy has embraced Almodovar before.

One that I haven’t even heard mentioned in this topic yet: Dark Waters. Academy friendly subject, Focus doesn’t have another major player outside of Harriet and Diwnton Abbey in acting, people could try and rally around getting Haynes first BP nomination after the Carol snub.

I also think Dark Waters could be a major BP player for the same reasons you listed. I’m waiting for the audience reception before I put it in my nominations, though.

I’m also not counting out The Report. As far as I know, Amazon doesn’t have another major player this year, and it could sneak into the lineup.

Depending on its quality, Richard Jewell could also be a last-minute player. The subject matter is important and the cast is stellar, but judging by Eastwood’s last few pictures, it could have a harder time with the Academy. We’ll just have to wait and see what the audience/critical reception is.

Finally, I know I’m probably going to get a lot of flak for this, but Cats could sneak up on everyone. Yes, I know, the trailer was scary, but it is a Tom Hooper film after all, and he has great success with the Academy…

I agree that Hustlers is in contention, but I am reluctant to predict it because the Academy rarely respond well to movies about sexy women, or women comfortable with their sexuality, or women aware of their sexuality and utilizing it, especially if those women are portrayed in a positive light.
