Adapted screenplay. The Big Short is the obvious choice, but I’m predicting Room even though I’m losing confindence in that prediction with every day. Brooklyn is my favourite screenplay of the year, and they did like that film, so I think it could spoil.

Best Director – Really looking forward to DGA and BAFTA to see where this is headed
Best Picture – Again waiting for DGA/BAFTA before I make the final pick

I understand all of the standing ovations for Stallone, his wins at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice, veteran factor, AND a non-Oscar nominee winning SAG all working in his favor. All of that aside, in terms of the performances in the category, I don’t understand why he’s the frontrunner. I’m not sure about it though! There are compelling arguments for all of the other contenders, as well, especially if their respective films win Best Picture (Bridge of Spies won’t be winning, though).
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 3, 2016 at 1:50 pm #214557Supporting Actor. The idea of Sylvester Stallone getting an Oscar for a weak performance and a weak career is obnoxious to me. I’m hoping for Rylance or Ruffalo. Even Bale would be a relief, even though I found the performance to be a one dimensional stereotype. At least it had its moments, and at least it would be Bale winning, who can actually act. Hardy’s performance was also caricaturish, so I wouldn’t want that either.

I just keep on making up different scenarios in my head; one moment I’m sure it’s Spotlight, then I think it’s definitely The Revenant, and then I think about the maths and think The Big Short. It is honestly a toss up, and could go absolutely anywhere, including Mad Max: Fury Road if it just has a stormer. There are just so many pros and cons for each of the major contenders.

Beyond that I don’t buy Miller as the frontrunner for director even though he’s my favorite of the bunch. Given the inclusion of Abrahamson and McKay it seems they’re far more interested in newer voices than veterans, when you add in the overwhelming support for the Revenant…I just don’t see it.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 3, 2016 at 3:01 pm #214563I’m not panicking over any categories. The only one that I truly care about besides Inside Out’s locked win is Supporting Actor. As a huge fan of the Rocky series and Creed being my favorite movie of the year I want to see Sylvester Stallone take home the Oscar. Right now I just have to deal with the people coming out of the woodwork to diss his performance as not worthy of a shiny statue. This isn’t new. It happens every year. No universal love for any actor ever lol.
