Between the 17th Academy Awards (1944) and 81st (2008), inclusive, only five films could be nominated for Best Picture in any given year. Before that era, 8-12 films were nominated each year; since then, it can go up to 10. And so for decades, there were many works that would have earned a Best Picture nomination that just didn’t quite make it into a list of five films.

In your opinion, what’s a film that would have made it into Best Picture consideration between 1944 and 2008 if there were another slot to spare?

This topic was inspired by me once again having to verify that no, Alien was not nominated for BP in 1980. (Although its reception has improved over time, so I’m quite possibly biased toward the modern view and it wouldn’t have made it in back then, anyway.)

I thought both Alien and Aliens should have gotten best picture nominations

A hell of a lot more animated films, especially since Up & Toy Story 3 both got in super easy in years of 10. No reason why something like Ratatouille or WALL-E couldn’t have been 7th or 8th in their respective years.
