Aaron Taylor-Johnson winning Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes. Literally no one, not even him, saw that coming.

The biggest gasp moment for me, apart from the obvious, is still when Emily Blunt was nominated at SAG. Just so shocking given that she couldn’t make it in with the Globes who love her more than anyone else.

Arrival beating La La Land at sound mixing at the Oscars (which I predicted)

Arrival actually won for sound editing. Hacksaw Ridge won for sound mixing.

Ruth Negga getting in at the Oscars.

Emily Blunt getting in at SAG and BAFTA.

    Hacksaw Ridge winning Editing Oscar.

How close Denzel came to winning the Oscar.

    Fantastic Beasts winning Costume Design.

I’d always had doubts about Jackie winning Costumes, even though I ended up predicting it in the end. My initial observation about the Costume Oscar regularly going to films with crowd scenes held true; I was just backing the wrong crowd-scene film (La La Land). I might have predicted Fantastic Beasts to win if I’d thought enough Academy members were watching it, although Bafta complicated things further by awarding it for Production Design but not Costumes.

I came very close to predicting FFJ myself, so the shock was not that Jackie lost, but that Fantastic Beasts won. I still can’t explain it myself. FFJ/LLL/Jackie vote-splitting?
