When a star wins a Golden Globe, it’s often their audition for an Oscar, of course. Think of Hilary Swank’s first tearful speech and think of Jamie Foxx addressing his grandma in heaven.

What are some other great golden globe acceptance speeches that probably had a strong impact on them winning the Oscar next?

I remember how enthusiastic and happy Winslet was in ’09 when she won; although, the speech that really moved me that year was the one by Mickey Rourke. That didnt help him win, which was really a shame imo. (Keaton’s acceptance for “Somethings Got to Give” was really sweet too)

I recall Charlize Theron’s huge smile. Didnt she publically thank Roger Ebert for helping her out so much with these wins?

Swank’s speech for “Boys Dont Cry” was uninhibited. She had such a huge smile I thought her face was going to break.

I just got an email from Boomer, who recalls Tom Hank’s powerful acceptance speech for Philadelphia and Emma Thompson’s whimsical one for the screenplay of “Sense and Sensibility” …. great examples!

Um … none of them? I can think of few, if any, “Oscar theories” more ludicrous than the idea Oscar voters pick who to vote for based on how much they liked someone’s speech a different award show.

Shirley MacLaine when she won for Terms of Endearment. That was when she began using the line “I deserve this.” It was lovely.

How about Jennifer Hudson giving Florence Ballard a shout out during her Globes speech?

Unlike this year’s Oscars, which had the memorable Melissa Leo F-bomb, I don’t see any memorable moments coming from either the Globes or the Oscars next year.

Meryl’s 5-minute long standing ovation will be interesting to watch.

So are you suggesting that without mentioning Ballard in her speech, Hudson would not have won the Oscar?

I am w/MysteriousRent. If GG acceptance speeches, aka public tom foolery, is a part of the Oscar campaign package, lord the problems w/playing the game a bigger than I thought.

Jamie Foxx’s was particularly interesting.  Calling out his Grandma and leading a Ray Charles sing along was beautifully touching at the Globes and cemented his frontrunner status at the Oscars.  However, it was awkward when he retreaded the exact same thing at the SAG awards and downright embarassing when he drudged it up a third time at the Oscars.  Not even his insufferable post-Oscar performances in some otherwise good films turned me off as much as that.

I don’t know if these speeches actually help but once I heard Sandra Bullock’s charming Golden Globe speech, I knew she would win. Especially the last part, which seems painfully ironic since the events that transpired with her now ex-husband but at the moment it was extremely charming, it probably convinced a couple of people to vote for her.
