After having done some research, it appears to me that no one has started a thread on this topic yet. What do you think were the runners-up for Best Original Song in any previous year? Here are my best educated guesses going as far back as the beginning of the century.

    2019: ‘Stand Up’ from Harriet
2018: ‘All the Stars’ from Black Panther
2017: ‘This is Me’ from The Greatest Showman
2016: ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana
2015: ‘Til It Happens to You’ from The Hunting Ground
2014: ‘Everything is Awesome’ from The Lego Movie
2013: ‘Ordinary Love’ from Mandela: The Long Walk to Freedom
    2012: ‘Suddenly’ from Les Misérables
2011: ‘Real in Rio’ from Rio
    2010: ‘If I Rise’ from 127 Hours
2009: ‘Almost There’ from The Princess and the Frog
2008: ‘Down to Earth’ from Wall-E
2007: ‘That’s How You Know’ from Enchanted
    2006: ‘Listen’ from Dreamgirls
2005: ‘In the Deep’ from Crash
2004: ‘Accidentally in Love’ from Shrek 2
2003: ‘You Will Be My Ain True Love’ from Cold Mountain
2002: ‘The Hands That Built America’ from Gangs of New York
2001: ‘May It Be’ from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
2000: ‘My Funny Friend and Me’ from The Emperor’s New Groove

I’m not super knowledgeable about the Oscars, but Aimee Mann’s “Save Me” should’ve been the runner-up for the 1999 Oscars (which are the ones that happened in 2000, right?). She should’ve won, to be perfectly honest, but oh well.

2016 is a tough one because both Trolls & Moana won the corresponding Grammy in 2017 2018, respectively. LMM was in peak Hamil-fever in 2016 and could’ve EGOT whilst CSTF was an absolute monster from a legacy popstar who was still cool & the most prolific producer of the last 25 years.

    1. “City of Stars”
    2. “How Far I’ll Go”
    3. “Can’t Stop the Feeling!”
    4. “Audition”
    5. That documentary song from Sting.

I leaned more towards ‘How Far I’ll Go’ given that Moana was the only other film in the lineup that had at least one additional nomination elsewhere.

    2006: ‘Listen’ from Dreamgirls

Given its writing credits controversy and it losing the corresponding to “Love You I Do”. I’m more inclined to say 2006 was as follows:

      01. I Need to Wake Up
      02. Love You I Do
      03. Listen/That song from Cars
      04. Listen/That song from Cars
      05. Patience
