So, on a recent thread* I’ve been cataloging each distributor’s main Oscars pushes. Notably, A24 does not have a For Your Consideration list yet on their website. So what of their films this year would be their pushes? Below are the films in chronological order. I will bold ones I deem especially notable to the conversation.
- Outlaws
- Climax
- The Hole in the Ground
- Gloria Bell
- High Life
Native Son(HBO)- Under The Silver Lake
- The Souvenir
- The Last Black Man in San Francisco
- Midsommar
- The Farewell
- Skin
- Share
- The Death of Dick Long
- Low Tide
- The Lighthouse
- The Kill Team
- Waves
- In Fabric
- Uncut Gems
Which of these will be their main push? Which categories will be focused upon?

October 12, 2019 at 7:22 pm #1203133907I honestly can’t give an accurate answer with their roster being such a mess this year lol. Whether it be release dates that were too early or holding contenders like The Lighthouse from the fall festivals, they’re killing themselves in such a weak year. They should’ve rushed Red, White, and Water out. Would’ve been an easy contender for them this year (especially in Best Actress) but welp to them I guess.

Also got banned because...reasons? So, I guess ciao.
October 12, 2019 at 7:23 pm #1203133909I’d say The Lighthouse is a NO brainer, over The Farewell, Waves and Uncut Gems, in that order.

Philip K Dick Blade RunnerOctober 12, 2019 at 7:24 pm #1203133911Waves for Supporting Actor. Doesn’t seem to be enough buzz from critics to pull off a Best Picture nod like Lady Bird and Moonlight.
The Farewell in Actress, Supporting Actress, Screenplay, Picture, and Director.
The Lighthouse in Actor, Supporting Actor, and Cinematography.
Uncut Gems in Actor. Midsommar in Cinematography and Costume Design.

October 12, 2019 at 9:35 pm #1203133993Call me naive but I feel they’ll go all out for Lighthouse in every feasible category. My guess is that Willem is their jewel this year.

Philip K Dick Blade RunnerOctober 12, 2019 at 9:46 pm #1203134001I feel like midsommar wouldn’t be a stretch to get into the technical categories if they campaign even just a little, but I think the lighthouse will be their biggest hit with a likely nom in screenplay for the farewell and possibly Adam Sandler sneaking in from uncut gems
ReplyCopy URLOctober 12, 2019 at 11:20 pm #1203134031The Farewell has the highest possible nomination total so of course that is their main horse. Waves died after Telluride. Lighthouse is a Dafoe and Cinematography play. Uncut Gems was never happening. And the rest is garbage. Dont understand why people are overthinking this.

That’s harsh take on The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Gloria Bell, and High Life. Might not be awards contenders but most of the time the Academy doesn’t nominate the best films of the year.

Even more so than Willem Dafoe or Awkwafina, since Zhao’s category is weak and she has been getting buzz that would, by default, position her as a frontrunner for a nomination.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 13, 2019 at 8:19 am #1203134272There’s no reason for A24 to push Midsommar, horror movies always do great with DVD/streaming, getting awards won’t give it that much boost. Add to that all kinds of biases Midsommar would face with awards voters. I don’t think a FYC campaign would be a good investment.
ReplyCopy URLOctober 13, 2019 at 8:43 am #1203134282Darlings, The Lighthouse and The Farewell are the only ones who scream dildo.
