So, on a recent thread* I’ve been cataloging each distributor’s main Oscars pushes. Notably, A24 does not have a For Your Consideration list yet on their website. So what of their films this year would be their pushes? Below are the films in chronological order. I will bold ones I deem especially notable to the conversation.

    • Outlaws
    • Climax
    • The Hole in the Ground
    • Gloria Bell
    • High Life
    • Native Son (HBO)
    • Under The Silver Lake
    • The Souvenir
    • The Last Black Man in San Francisco
    • Midsommar
    • The Farewell
    • Skin
    • Share
    • The Death of Dick Long
    • Low Tide
    • The Lighthouse
    • The Kill Team
    • Waves
    • In Fabric
    • Uncut Gems

Which of these will be their main push? Which categories will be focused upon?

    For Your Consideration:

Best Picture: Weathering With You, Parasite, The Lighthouse
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You, Promare
Best International Film: Weathering With You, Parasite

I honestly can’t give an accurate answer with their roster being such a mess this year lol. Whether it be release dates that were too early or holding contenders like The Lighthouse from the fall festivals, they’re killing themselves in such a weak year. They should’ve rushed Red, White, and Water out. Would’ve been an easy contender for them this year (especially in Best Actress) but welp to them I guess.

I’d say The Lighthouse is a NO brainer, over The Farewell, Waves and Uncut Gems, in that order.

Waves for Supporting Actor. Doesn’t seem to be enough buzz from critics to pull off a Best Picture nod like Lady Bird and Moonlight.

The Farewell in Actress, Supporting Actress, Screenplay, Picture, and Director.

The Lighthouse in Actor, Supporting Actor, and Cinematography.

Uncut Gems in Actor. Midsommar in Cinematography and Costume Design.

So, in the interest of elaboration, here is what A24awards said was being campaigned in each year. Award winners are bolded, nominees italicised. 🕊︎ next to Best Picture nominees.

    2013

    • The Bling Ring
    • The Spectacular Now
    • Spring Breakers

    2014

    • A Most Violent Year
    • Enemy
    • Locke
    • Obvious Child
    • Under The Skin
    • The Rover

    2015

    • Amy
    • The End of the Tour
    • Ex Machina
    • Mississipi Grind
    • Remember
    • Room 🕊︎
    • Slow West
    • While We’re Young

    2016

    • 20th Century Women
    • American Honey
    • De Palma
    • Green Room
    • Krisha
    • Moonlight 🕊︎🕊︎
    • Morris From America
    • Swiss Army Man
    • The Lobster
    • The VVitch

    2017

    • A Ghost Story
    • Good Time
    • It Comes At Night
    • Lady Bird 🕊︎
    • Menashe
    • The Ballad of Lefty Brown
    • The Disaster Artist
    • The Florida Project
    • The Killing of a Sacred Deer
    • The Lovers

    2018

    • Eighth Grade
    • First Reformed
    • Hereditary
    • Mid 90s

So, 4 award winning films, 10 award nominated films. A24 campaigns a lot more than will get in each year.

    For Your Consideration:

Best Picture: Weathering With You, Parasite, The Lighthouse
Best Supporting Actor: Willem Dafoe - The Lighthouse
Best Animated Feature: Weathering With You, Promare
Best International Film: Weathering With You, Parasite

probably The Farewell since it’s the easiest nomination they can get

FYC: Octavia Spencer (Luce) - Best Supporting Actress

I really hope they campaign Pugh at least a little bit, and the production design of Midsommar.

Call me naive but I feel they’ll go all out for Lighthouse in every feasible category. My guess is that Willem is their jewel this year.

I feel like midsommar wouldn’t be a stretch to get into the technical categories if they campaign even just a little, but I think the lighthouse will be their biggest hit with a likely nom in screenplay for the farewell and possibly Adam Sandler sneaking in from uncut gems

The Farewell has the highest possible nomination total so of course that is their main horse. Waves died after Telluride. Lighthouse is a Dafoe and Cinematography play. Uncut Gems was never happening. And the rest is garbage. Dont understand why people are overthinking this.

    And the rest is garbage.

That’s harsh take on The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Gloria Bell, and High Life. Might not be awards contenders but most of the time the Academy doesn’t nominate the best films of the year.

Dafoe in Supporting, Awkwafina in Lead. Those should be easy noms if they campaign.

I’d imagine getting a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Zhao Shuzhen (The Farewell) would be their easiest bet. Even more so than Willem Dafoe or Awkwafina, since Zhao’s category is weak and she has been getting buzz that would, by default, position her as a frontrunner for a nomination.

There’s no reason for A24 to push Midsommar, horror movies always do great with DVD/streaming, getting awards won’t give it that much boost. Add to that all kinds of biases Midsommar would face with awards voters. I don’t think a FYC campaign would be a good investment.

Darlings, The Lighthouse and The Farewell are the only ones who scream dildo.
