That’s harsh take on The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Gloria Bell, and High Life. Might not be awards contenders but most of the time the Academy doesn’t nominate the best films of the year.

They most likely haven’t watched them.

    For Your Consideration:

Best International Feature: Instinct (The Netherlands)
Best Actress: Carice van Houten (Instinct)

Can’t believe I’m so tardy to my favorite topic, but just to echo what most people have said here, The Farewell and The Lighthouse are the most likely, but one should not count out Sterling K. Brown and Adam Sandler in the acting categories. They may not make it all the way to the Oscars, but I’d say A24 is going to be racking up a lot of the critics prizes, Gothams, Indie Spirits and year-end lists this season.

They did it with far inferior films last season, First Reformed, Eighth Grade and Hereditary, so now that they have bigger projects with bigger stars attached and narratives driving them, A24 has no reason not to leave this season with a handful of trophies and prizes for more than just acting, but also screenwriting and, surprisingly, tech categories too. And on the British side of things, The Souvenir will definitely contend for something. Midsommar is definitely not happening though.

I honestly can’t give an accurate answer with their roster being such a mess this year lol. Whether it be release dates that were too early or holding contenders like The Lighthouse from the fall festivals, they’re killing themselves in such a weak year. They should’ve rushed Red, White, and Water out. Would’ve been an easy contender for them this year (especially in Best Actress) but welp to them I guess.

I have a strong feeling Red, White and Water is going to premiere at Sundance so it’ll be out in the world so soon darling

There’s no reason for A24 to push Midsommar, horror movies always do great with DVD/streaming, getting awards won’t give it that much boost. Add to that all kinds of biases Midsommar would face with awards voters. I don’t think a FYC campaign would be a good investment.

I think Hereditary was a more awards friendly proposition and the Academy ignored it.

Kathy Bates for Best Supporting Actress (Richard Jewell)

I wish Binoche in High Life was pushed for supporting actress.

Me too but honestly, that film is SO indigestible. Its RT audience score is TELLING

Anybody know why all of a sudden, they only campaigned four movies last year?

I just love movies. And awards.

Now that they are like 75% original production, 25% acquisitions, I think they had a waiting period on all the films that came out this spring and fall and instead of giving Gloria Bell, Climax and High Life thankless fall releases, they saved them for the spring for maximum performance. And since they made so much money with Lady Bird and Hereditary in the spring, they didn’t really have to release anything.

Now, I don’t think that will ever happen again. If you go to their Wikipedia page, you’ll see that they have dozens of film in post production. They have so many films that they threw original titles like Death of Dick Long and, soon to be released, In Fabric on streaming after a weekend in theaters.
