Hey All, what voting system would y’all wanna see for Best Picture (or all the nominees)? I’ve been thinking it over and I’d be interested to see a simple Borda count or modified Borda count. I’m not sure if I’d a sequential pairwise voting process, but I wanna hear everyone’s suggestions and opinions. Also, the preferential ballot is also known as a Hare system.

It uses, the Oscars as the homework example!

Here’s another one with the Grammy’s and the Oscars!

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 12, 2019 at 9:52 am #1202773459I’d keep it simple. Whoever has the most votes wins. End of story.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 12, 2019 at 10:02 am #1202773474While I agree that the current system has tactical voting issues, to say that a plurality system does not have them is a little misguided. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plurality_voting
I would argue that the preferential ballot does a better job than a plurality system. Just look at several recent government elections.
Nevertheless, I also think the current voting process for BP(a Hare system to be exact) should be swapped for a modified Borda count method. IMHO, it would offer much more of a consensus than either the Hare system (preferential ballot) or plurality system because every film would get its representation and not just be eliminated or have a wasted vote

You mean in the first place? I assume so, but I would argue enough people are annoyed by the system’s flaws that it might be advantageous to switch to a system (Modified Borda count) that is more representative of what the academy actually thinks about the films nominated. Nothing would change, the voters would still rank like they do, but the way the winner would be determined would be more attentive to how good the voters think a film is while also punishing voters (slightly) who don’t rank everything but still letting them rep hard for their favorite film.

I think they decided to change the system after The Dark Knight was snubbed for Best Picture in favour of The Reader.
Twitter exploded which resulted in an expended 10 nominees and a new voting system.

Ah though this worded differently. That’s exactly what happened. Too bad Twitter wasn’t around when They Shoot Horses Don’t They got 9 noms and no BP nomination (still holds the record).

ReplyCopy URLFebruary 12, 2019 at 5:34 pm #1202773989I have no problem with the preferential ballot. My issue is with the number of nominees. They should make 10, not anywhere between 6 and 10.
Each member should nominate 10 films from 1 to 10. The top 10 films with the most points becomes our Best Picture nominee.

Unless you’re a mathematician with a PhD that is very tough to understand.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 12, 2019 at 5:49 pm #1202774003Nothing. But maybe make it 80% Academy members and 20% people’s votes? IDK. They’re all about trying to be relevant so there you go…
ReplyCopy URLI just love movies. And awards.
