What’s your choice from the line-up of William Holden’s win?
William Holden - Stalag 17
Marlon Brando - Julius Caesar
Richard Burton - The Robe
Montgomery Clift - From Here to Eternity
Burt Lancaster - From Here to Eternity

Have you seen all the nominees? Who do you pick?

I’ve just rewatched ”Julius Caesar” and I know Brando enters halfway into the movie, but I’m really torned between Clift and him.

Either of the two From Here to Eternity guys, but I’m leaning towards Clift.

William Holden deserved his Oscar. He was also excellent in Network.

Clift deserved the win for sure. Holden is 2nd and Brando 3rd. Brando should have been nominated for “The Wild One” though. I could have gone with different actors for the last two spots like Spencer Tracy in “The Actress” and Richard Widmark in “Pickup On South Street”.

Fine with Holden win. But Cliff right behind . Too bad he didn’t win in his career

Was Clift considered a possibility to win for Judgement at Nuremberg? I saw it a long time ago and don’t really remember if he was deserving.

I’ve heard George Chikaris’ win mocked as undeserving.

I recall that the prize that year was between Gleason and Clift, yet Chakiris won in an upset, which was a really dumb choice. Clift and Gleason were both phenomenal, and Clift was way overdue as well. What were they thinking?

    …All the way, all day.

Monty being snubbed four times is rather symbolic of his underdog status in general, wouldn’t you say? Yes, he was and is a celebrated icon, but he also never got the credit he deserved for revolutionizing both pop culture gender norms and the concept of on-screen acting.

He opened the bank for Dean and Brando and they walked away with the money.

Brando is actually my favorite performance of these, but I don’t have a problem with Holden’s win and I think Monty deserved it most for A Place in the Sun but he’s beautiful in FHTE as well and should have won at some point.

Chakiris’ win is one of the worst of the category and not even because of the great performances he won over but just in general. He was a fine dancer but the performance otherwise was pedestrian. He got swept up in the glorification of WEST SIDE STORY, which other than it’s original score form the stage is way overrated IMO.

I disagree with the Chakiris dragging going on here. I thought he was wonderfully dangerous and seductive. And he wasn’t just dancing, there’s so much personality and character in his movements.

I love his win because performances like that aren’t usually embraced, likely due to being so heavy and music and dancing. His victory is unique, and I quite like it.
