I went with Dangerous, although she was also worthy in Fatal Attraction.

With Fatal Attraction and 101 Dalmatians, she has truly remained an iconic figure of cinema.

“Dangerous Liaisons.” That’s the one time where everything should have coalesced for Glenn Close’s Oscar win. “The Accused” has aged very poorly over time, and the Academy would honor Jodie Foster again in three years anyways. But that’s the Oscars in a nutshell. Here’s to “The Wife” finally breaking the curse!

1988 was a really odd year. You had three of the acting categories go to surprise winners. (Kevin Kline and Geena Davis were shocks. Foster less so but still a bit of a surprise.)

And unfortunately this is unlikely to ever happen again with 4 televised precursors. In the old days there was only one (the Globes) as BAFTAs usually took place after Oscars and SAG and Critics Choice awards didn’t exist yet. And the Globes has virtually zero voter overlap so there were basically no stats to latch onto. Much more exciting for an Oscar prognosticator.

I haven’t seen the movies before Fatal Attraction, but about 1983, i have no issue with Jessica Lange winning, Why would Meryl Streep win for Sophie’s choice when Bette Davis and Gloria Swanson lost to Judy Halliday or Holiday for legendary perfomances?. Jessica winning for Tootsie isn’t the smartest choice but they had to and they were right after le tour de force on Frances.

Fatal Attraction, i know everybody wanted her to win for this one and i totally agree however, this is not the kind of perf.  the academy usually rewards. But still now in 2018 we remember more Glenn Close in fatal attraction than Cher  or any other actress nominated that year, it says it all on who deserved to win.

In 1989, no one deserved to win except HER… she gave a masterclass perfomance in Dangerous Liaisons, i mean just the ending scene deserved an oscar (I see you Viola Davis in Murder)

I think the academy doesn’t like her.

In regards to Jessica Lange going supporting for Tootsie I believe that idea first came from the New York Film Critics. They liked her a lot in Frances but couldn’t award her over Streep so decided to throw her a supporting trophy. Then the studio jumped on the idea and ran with it.

It is funny to watch that award being presented. Lange is up against two co-stars Garr and Stanley. Kim Stanley doesn’t look very happy when Lange wins. I don’t know if that is unhappiness that she lost or unhappiness that she now knew Lange wouldn’t win Best Actress (or both.) I like Lange in Tootsie though. She brings a real sadness and depth to what could have been just a girlfriend role. (and the screen time still seems supporting to me. Dustin is the only star.)

Garr was especially perturbed by Lange’s category placement and even told the press, post-Oscars, that her co-star should’ve earned a Lead push for the film.

For what it’s worth, I too really like Lange in Tootsie but she still ranks 4th for me among the nominees, ahead of only Close.

    Benjamin Booker.

Cis is cisgender Sis is sister which is what you meant.

There’s men that don’t like to be called sis so I always say “cis” as a default unless I’ve been misgendering you this whole time.

    Why does it matter? Seriously.

Was Garr mad though? I’ve read that but never been able to find any actual quotes. There was a youtube clip where she is leaving the ceremony and is sort of philosophical saying something like oh well, I think Jessica was really winning for Frances and I can understand that but I’ll be back! (sadly she never did make it back though)

I always liked the way Lange thanked Garr. Just the way she says “Teri Garr” it almost conveys yeah, this is awkward, you got a raw deal here.
