Did anyone predict Winslet to be nominated ? I just rewatched Wonder Wheel and you can see how hard she was thirsting over that 2nd Oscar, in every. single. scene. Trying so hard to have her Blue Jasmine moment only to be ignored yikes

And lol @ the OP calling the race exciting only for McDormand to stomp and leave the other girls in the dust

I only started really getting into Oscars in the middle of this particular season, so seeing these threads fills me with such nostalgia. I was stanning Margot since the beginning and was praying that she could get the GG and SAG at the very least, but as soon as I saw 3BB I had a feeling that McDormand would sweep since it just seemed like the type of performance that the HFPA and the older members of the Academy would swoon over even with other alternatives in the category.

This thread omg. The underestimation of McDormand. Throwback to when I thought J Law had a chance to be nominated at the Globes and then the rest of the way, and still predicted her when she didn’t happen anywhere lol.

The way HFPA cancelled both Jlaw and Winslet in one fell swoop when they usually worship those two.. That was just brutal

And crowned McDormand after years of snubbing her. They couldn’t make her film happen at the oscars but her place was saved.

Well to be fair, neither deserved a nomination that year.

And to think all those Globe wins would’ve translated to something.

In retrospect it does seem weird McDormand won in that line-up, and it may very well just be due to the Globes influence, yet the Globes may  have just picked her because they owed her and were in love with 3BB. I think McDormand absolutely was win worthy but there were also 3 other win-worthy performances given by actors who you would think people would want to reward for the first time. Lady Bird was the closest Ronan had ever come to winning, Robbie fits the bill for winners perfectly and had a flashy performance/the producing narrative, and Hawkins gave a showy performance in the eventual BP winner. And it’s not like McDormands career screams that she needs 2 lead Oscars, even if both were deserved.

Another proof that HFPA is way too influential when it comes to lead acting categories. McDormand winning legit ended Sally despite her critical success. Saoirse was still in the race since female Musical/Comedic performances actually stand a chance to win (hello Olivia) until SAG said NO. Frances is extremely popular in the industry for some reason

HFPA owed her the award anyway. She lost her Fargo Globe to Madonna out of all people (who wasn’t even nominated at the Oscars, what kind of mess is that). L o l
