With “Roma”s defeat last year and with 1917’s upcoming victory over parasite, I can’t stop wondering what it will take for an international film to win best picture at the Oscars? Personally I don’t believe they will ever do it. They are just too biased and short sighted. They still believe Hollywood makes the best films of the year! The Oscars should change it’s name to the best english language films awards! I have lost my faith in the accademy.

Just because you didn’t like 1917 personally doesn’t mean it’s not a great film and it doesn’t deserve to win. This is a very strong year in film and there’s just so much competition.

If Parasite really fails to win, I’m sure there will still be opportunities in the future for international films to win Best Picture, especially if the film is an undeniable frontrunner in a less competitive race.

Get rid of the foreign film category.

    Does “canada” count as “international”?
Lol. How about more often than lady director wins or nods?

Hopefully this year, when Parasite gets surprise victories in Best Original Screenplay and Best Picture along with Best International Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. If not though, I’m not really sure when. Parasite got so much love this year, especially from the guilds (even the DGA’s gave Bong a standing ovation after giving their top prize to Mendes). It’s hard to imagine another film like Parasite will come along anytime soon.

People keep saying that but the industry is too basic to give BP to one. I’ve lost all hope.

    One can also say

When will “Cesar” recognise international films

When will “David di Donatello” recognise international films

When will “Filmfare” recognise international films

When will “Premios Goya” recognise international films

When will “Bodil Awards” recongnise international films

Thing is AMPAS/Academy are Hollywood Film Awards first and foremost as Bong Joon Ho also said recently.

Hollywood is oldest and biggest film industry so we tend to say it should be representative of world but it wasn’t it’s motive ever.

It was a party for Hollywood Films and celebrate them just like Bodil does with Danish films,Cesar does with French films,David di Donatello does with Italian films,Goya does with Spanish films,Filmfare does with Indian films and many other old award bodies does with their regional films.

It’s FACT like it or not.

Why? You can show passion and admiration for someone’s work while still voting for someone else.

To my knowledge most of those awards are exclusively dedicated to films from their own nation, with the obvious exception of their foreign film award. They are not really comparable to AMPAS which is a kind of hybrid between Hollywood industry and international film organisation. If films from anywhere in the world can meet the eligibility requirements for Best Picture, it’s not then fair for Academy members to discredit such films after they already receive nominations. Besides, AMPAS has had no issue with awarding their top prize to films produced exclusively in the UK or even France (not including distribution). Those are just as foreign as Roma and Parasite except for the language spoken in them.

This seems two faced as hell for me too. You give Bong the LOUDEST cheers and the BIGGEST ovation but you didn’t vote for him. Feels wrong.

I’m still with joon-ho. How wrong is that?

I think it’s just more likely they liked Parasite more but felt 1917 had the best Direction. Which only furthur convinces me that Parasite will do better on the Academy’s preferential ballot.

C’mon Hammad! You didn’t mention the Geminis! (The Colony won. Wonder if AMPAS heard of that one?)
    Lol.
I see your point but the Academy is peopled with international citizens.
