If you type into Google “Greatest Actresses of All Time” (exactly as it’s written and spelled out like that), these are the results for the top 15:
Greatest Actresses of All Time:
1. Meryl Streep
2. Katherine Hepburn
3. Bette Davis
4. Audrey Hepburn
5. Elisabeth Taylor
6. Ingrid Bergman
7. Jodie Foster
8. Julianne Moore
9. Cate Blanchett
10.Kate Winslet
11.Grace Kelly
12.Nicole Kidman
13.Marilyn Monroe
14.Helen Mirren
15.Judi Dench
(Thoughts?? I’m only surprised about Foster and Moore ahead of Blanchett and Monroe making the top 15, but aside from that, it seems pretty legit and accurate).

ReplyCopy URLAugust 30, 2021 at 9:41 pm #1204425882The order in which the actresses come up when you search “greatest actresses of all time” on Google isn’t exactly a ranking; it’s an itemized list constructed from all general sources across the Internet. Nevertheless, I’m sure Meryl Streep, for instance, comes up first because she’s widely considered to be the greatest actress of all time and then other actresses follow underneath (just not necessarily from greatest to least greatest, it’s purely because those actresses are the ones who appear on many pages across the web, having something to do with a general listing of actresses who are considered the greatest of all time or have the reputation of being one of the greatest actresses of all time, e.g. Cate Blanchett). I hope I don’t come off as pedantic, I just want to preface that the list isn’t based on superiority.
I digress: from just looking at the top 15, I’d say they’re all deserving of appearing on the list.

Viola Davis and Halle Berry come up later down the list, but yes, it’s rather disheartening that the list disproportionately lacks women of color.

Some of my favorite international actresses:

Jeanne Moreau
Madhabi Mukherjee
Nargis
Hanna Schygulla
Kinuyo Tanaka
Liv UllmanAugust 30, 2021 at 10:54 pm #1204425909Simply because women of color haven’t gotten the same opportunities as those names on the list. It’s hard to compare Viola Davis’ four or five significant movie roles to Meryl Streep’s filmography and we really shouldn’t. ‘Greatest’ is really a strong word and I don’t think that there is an absolute consensus in this matter.
For example I find Meryl’s legacy legendary, but do I think she’s among the Top 3 actresses of all time? Not necessarily.

That being said, yes, I think Swinton, Huppert, Gong Li and names such as Cicely Tyson and Whoopi Goldberg would be deserving here.
