I wonder how many women turned down Misery (and why.)

I know Bette Midler and Jessica Lange did. I’d guess Meryl was offered it too. Surprising (but great) that an unknown stage actress got the part.

(Tons of men turned down the male lead but that’s more understandable since he spends most of the film in bed.)

This site lists people but i never know how accurate the site is. This list sounds pretty reasonable but some of their pages are very hard to believe.

That s an interesting list! MTM wanted the role.
I can imagine some of them like Bette and Harrison but no. Kathy is just too iconic. Glad they went with Caan. Can’t think of too many roles where’s he’s completely helpless.

I think the fact that the part was frumpy, unlikable, and, well, a psychopath probably. These days, some would use it as their “Oscar vehicle”. A stage actress like Bates saw the great character underneath it all. I think it needed an unknown and someone willing to let herself get lost in the character.

Moore was pretty brave going for unlikable roles in her later career. Her last Emmy came for that movie Stolen Babies where she played a really villainous and physically unattractive character. She might have been interesting as Annie Wilkes.

Yes. Some beauty would grab the role and be praised for how brave she was for letting herself look like that.

She was definitely not second or maybe even definitely not third for About Schmidt. The film couldn’t even get a screenplay nomination and she is barely in it(although I think she is great none the less). I think Moore could have surpassed her in the final vote tally with Zeta-Jones and Streep ahead.

I think the wrong assumption is Queen Latifah was dead last when she likely was the spoiler between Moore and Zeta-Jones.

lol! Poor Kathy. She looks as “normal” as a teacher in Little House on the Woods.
