The disdain for the Bates nod is wholly ageist. And the majority hadn’t seen Richard Jewell nor had any interest in it. Eastwood has a voter bloc within the Academy and they rallied behind her.

Ageism certainly played a role in the propensity of some to quickly denigrate or dismiss Bates’ nomination while not questioning the systemic implications of any nominee in any category that year. While Bates is certainly an example of how the studio hierarchy benefits some nominees over others, the whole “5th spot is wholly responsible for someone being blocked” narrative isn’t exactly a bastion of progressivism and I believe it perpetuates a false narrative about the ways in which institutional racism may operate.
