I think it’s very possible that the next actor to win 3 Oscars will be somebody who has not yet won a second one. It wouldn’t surprise me if, before they are through, Leonardo DiCaprio or Christian Bale or Sam Rockwell or Daniel Kaluuya wind up winning 3.

3rd acting Oscars are unusual. McDormand is only the 7th person to do it in 93 years of the Oscars.

of course, you are correct. I’m not saying it’s likely that ANY male actor will win a third Oscar; I’ve merely identified actors who have already won one, whom it wouldn’t surprise me to see win two more. The odds are that none of the actors you’ve listed who have already won two (let alone any of the ones I’ve cited who have won “only” one) will win a third. Of those who have already won two, I think Denzel is the most likely to win a third.
ReplyCopy URLApril 28, 2021 at 9:51 pm #1204234363You guys are going to think I’m crazy but I think the sleeper pick is Mahershala Ali. I think it’s very possible for him to win a Lead Oscar. He’s the youngest one on this list…by a lot. He’s a talented actor who has a commanding presence about him where every time he’s on screen, you would think he’s the main character even when he’s not. And it looks like he’s going for more lead roles now, which is the difference between him and Christoph Waltz. I think the fact that his first 2 quickly won Oscars weren’t for Lead like they were for Tom Hanks, also helps his case.

I know it has yet to happen but until then the stat that no one with two supporting wins has ever won a third in lead is a real barrier.
Bergman, Nicholson, Streep: 2 Lead, 1 Supporting.

This doesn’t change my mind. However, this is an interesting stat I wasn’t aware of so thanks for letting me know! I guess Ali would be making even more history if he were to get that Lead Oscar.
ReplyCopy URLApril 29, 2021 at 12:32 am #1204234466Waltz and Ali are both likely, esp. the latter. He is far from done yet, his big momentum just started recently, so it’s absolutely possible that he’s going to win another one in the next 10-15 years. He could be the Walter Brennan of our time!
Waltz is a diff. case, I feel like if he is not in a Tarantino movie, his chances are slim for recognizion. Like he was good in films like Carnage, but pretty bad in some others. He needs Tarantino’s guidence.

Casey Affleck’s win was one of the best wins of all time, so def. not for Fences. Malcolm X, for sure!

Yup, my thoughts exactly.
ReplyCopy URLApril 29, 2021 at 4:15 am #1204234525People voting Mahershala Ali, what on earth are you on about???
He’s done, he’s been lucky that he won two for “just fine” performances and he was certainly helped by the BP frontrunner status of those movies.
There’s no way he’ll ever win a third one, he’ll be very lucky if he ever gets nominated again.
Washington is on his way of becoming a legendary actor, so he’s probably the only one in this list with an actual and realistic chance of snagging a third one.
