So, Saoirse Ronan has 4 Oscar nominations. Which performance of hers is your favorite?
Personally, I can’t decide between Brooklyn and Little Women.

January 13, 2020 at 5:26 pm #1203282763I’m a little surprised myself but I went with Lady Bird, a movie/performance that I considered good not great when I first saw it but in the years since the more it sits with me the more and more impressed I am by it. I remember a critic saying (can’t remember who) “I cannot describe to you how refreshing this movie is” – and me thinking that was really extreme but now that’s exactly how I feel about the movie and her performance: refreshing.

January 13, 2020 at 6:19 pm #1203282847Lady Bird ez. LW is just her Lady Bird character in a period piece. And she mostly just stands around in brooklyn.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2020 at 6:37 pm #1203282865What I realized is that Saoirse has a horrible track record of her movies going on to win nothing at the oscars
Atonement: 8 noms 1 win
Brooklyn: 3 noms 0 wins
Lady Bird: 5 noms 0 wins
Little Women: 6 noms, probably 1 win with a good chance of nothing.
Amy Adams has similar numbers
January 13, 2020 at 6:59 pm #1203282894I predict Saoirse will win her first Oscar for a role in which she acts a bit sexy. Hate to say it but time shall tell

Florence Pugh is way more Kate Winslet. Regardless, they’re all individuals.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2020 at 7:33 pm #1203282921There’s a bit more naturalism to her work in Atonement, Brooklyn and Lady Bird than there is in Little Women, but I still love that perf from her.
Out of those three, the most nuanced would be Brooklyn. You can feel the range of her work over the progress of the film.

Yeah tbf she is and I hope she continues to get good roles so she can get nominated and eventually win.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2020 at 7:36 pm #1203282931Lady Bird was my favorite movie that year and she was amazing in it, but Brooklyn was what made me a Ronan fan. She took what would have been a dry movie and carried it on her back. I hardly ever cry in movies and I teared up at the scene with her mom.
Tbh I think Hollywood should be bending over backwards to give her more roles where she can use her natural accent. That’s when her performance will be at its best, I feel, even though she’s still great when she’s keeping up a fake accent.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 13, 2020 at 7:53 pm #1203282973she’s been consistently excellent and frankly win-worthy in the last two, maybe even three nominations, but her performance in little women feels like an elevated amalgamation of her previous works, eilis found resolution in her lover, christine found resolution in family and religion, jo found resolution in her own creative strengths, it’s just such a natural progression
