I completely agree. First at all, I think te movie is good but it’s f….ing boring. Yes, scarlet and Adam give their all but it’s still a boring movie. I think Roma was more entertaining that is saying a lot. So, along all this boredom, surges Laura Dern moments which are a bit sassy and put some spice on the movie. Having said that, i don’t understand how voters can keep praising that performance over the genius perfomance of Florence or the amazing moments of Scarlet in JoJo, which is my favorite film of the year. No matee if she is Laura Dern or Abraham Lincoln great daughter this a nonsense. I hopeVoters realize the huge mistake they are about to do and recognize this other ladies since they already snub the most entertaining, heartfelt, genuine and fun performance of the year, Aka: Jlo.January 17, 2020 at 4:20 pm #1203289895
It’s too bad, because I usually love her work and I otherwise love Marriage Story. Somehow, the film’s one mild weakness is what’s apparently going to get all of the awards.January 17, 2020 at 4:22 pm #1203289898
you are right about the back flashes and Jonathan Prices performances but the fact that they made an interesting dialogue out of 2 priest having a 2 hour conversation is already an achievement. I find it waaaaay more entertaining than The Irishman which is like the English Patience of the year. Thank god the members have changed all we will see all the old, white, male voters voting for The Irishman.January 17, 2020 at 4:25 pm #1203289902
Joker is a mostly empty piece of filmmaking that pretends to depth while comparing itself to actual cinematic masterworks. Its unearned arrogance left me seriously annoyed. Its screenplay nomination is a better joke than anything the supposed comedian characters in it said.January 17, 2020 at 4:37 pm #1203289918
I LOVE Laura Dern but seriously WTF re frontrunner status for her role in ‘Marriage Story.’ I feel as though it was a weak year for both actress categories and she’s getting it for the dearth of worthy performances (ahem, roles) and because she’s Hollywood royalty. If I were her I’d tell voters not to vote for me for such a throwaway character.January 17, 2020 at 4:43 pm #1203289921
I love Laura Dern but her performance in Marriage Story was meh…. I prefer her in Little Women.January 17, 2020 at 4:46 pm #1203289925
Joker in Costume Design. Come on, even Judy is more deserving.

Also Joker was an overrated film. Phoenix carried the entire movie. He’s a worthy winner. Don’t understand why Phillips got the nod over Baumbach, Gerwig, and other directors.January 17, 2020 at 5:14 pm #1203289944
Laura Dern. Periodt.January 17, 2020 at 5:17 pm #1203289947
All of them? It would be better to ask who is more deserving which is a shorter list. Anyway the Overrated in the top 8.

The Irishman. Bah. So boring. And bad casting. And who thought using CGI to make really old actors look younger was a good idea? Their body movements and stiffness betray their true age. Scorsese has already made this movie before and it was better the first time (Goodfellas).
I think it would’ve been if they’d put vanity aside and casted younger actors for the flashbacks. I’ll never get over Pesci calling De Niro “kid” in that car repair scene. Have to laugh!January 17, 2020 at 6:09 pm #1203289989

What was so extraordinary about Baumbach’s direction that he deserved to get in over Phillips?January 17, 2020 at 6:11 pm #1203289991

Agreed, it was so hilarious and bad. That’s what the Two Popes got right. They casted another actor to portray younger version of Jonathan Pryce’s character and it worked. The Irishman failed at making it look authentic because the visual effects couldn’t de-age the actors’ postures and motor movements. It was ridiculous.January 17, 2020 at 6:23 pm #1203290002
I love Scorcese and the actors in The Irishman but the only one who really blew me away was Al Pacino. I would’ve nominated De Niro over Pryce as wellJanuary 17, 2020 at 6:32 pm #1203290020
The fact J-Lo was not nominated (who should of won imo) over Laura Dern getting a nomination for a role where she literally acts like EVERY single character she has ever played & is gonna win is a big YAWN
I’m sorry… What? Try watching Citizen Ruth, Jurassic Park, Smooth Talk, Wild at Heart, Rambling Rose, The Tale, Wild, and Little Women (which literally came out this year) and then tell me she plays the same character every time. It’s fair to say she’s overrated but honestly that saying that she only plays one type of role is delusional and frankly stupid.
