Scarlett Johanson in Marriage Story is so overrated in my opinion. Most of the time she was on screen I was distinctly aware of the fact that she was acting. In Jojo Rabbit, on the other hand, I actually felt like she became her character.January 17, 2020 at 7:38 pm #1203290108
So agree about overrated Laura Dern! Rather have Florence Pugh win for “Little Women”.January 17, 2020 at 7:43 pm #1203290110
I don’t think Dern should be sweeping for Marriage Story but I don’t think it’s fair to say she has only played the same role over her entire career. I mean just this year she is in two BP contenders in vastly different roles. It’s a shame she isn’t nominated and winning for Little Women because I think it would be fully deserved, but I’m not mad about Laura Dern being an Oscar winner.January 17, 2020 at 7:58 pm #1203290120
Agreed, it was so hilarious and bad. That’s what the Two Popes got right. They casted another actor to portray younger version of Jonathan Pryce’s character and it worked. The Irishman failed at making it look authentic because the visual effects couldn’t de-age the actors’ postures and motor movements. It was ridiculous.
It really failed with Robert De Niro. Scorsese should have used Jack Huston as the younger version of Frank, instead he was wasted in the role of Bobby Kennedy with that ridiculous blond hair. It worked better with Pesci and Pacino because their characters were older than De Niro’s character.
The Oscar needs to get rid of the preferential ballot so it can name a deserving movie as Best Picture again.January 17, 2020 at 8:02 pm #1203290124
I really want Florence Pugh to win over Laura Dern. She had an amazing transformation in maturity with her role. Whereas Dern was in Marriage for like 10 minutes? At best?January 17, 2020 at 8:25 pm #1203290136
Cynthia Erivo in Harriett, she really hammed it up and overacted in the movie.January 17, 2020 at 9:21 pm #1203290199
Shoot me, but I don’t understand all this gushing over Laura Dern’s role in “Marriage Story.” As usual, she’s just portraying Laura Dern … again. Fifty years from now do you really believe that anyone will watch that “performance” and gasp, “Wow! Now THAT’s a great role!”?
Not every role has to be “transforming into somebody else entirely” to be a great performance, Tom.January 17, 2020 at 9:53 pm #1203290241
Not every role has to be “transforming into somebody else entirely” to be a great performance, Tom.
But a role confined solely to two forced monologues that say a lot without really saying anything at all, taking her blouse off in a flustered manner, and switching between tough-as-nails lawyer to tender lunch menu connoisseur shouldn’t be awarded as if it’s Charlize Theron in “Monster.”
Pugh or even Johansson should be winning this. Even Robbie was stronger than Dern. We have to realize that Dern’s connections have boosted her to astronomical levels of support amongst Hollywood and it’s virtually impossible for newcomers with legitimately deserving performances to compete with her after her resurgence in the past three years. Dern’s narrative relies more on the overdue factor than even Glenn Close’s had, since Close had an actual performance to back it up.January 18, 2020 at 4:38 am #1203290425
Cynthia Erivo in Harriett, she really hammed it up and overacted in the movie.
I completely disagree with you. She never overacted and she’s the best in that category

Everything with Marriage Story is overrated…..especially Laura Dern and that silly screenplay.
If Laura Dern wins, I’ll know that corruption has eaten deeply into the Oscars roots.
I’m surprised no one has mentioned Once Upon A Time In Hollywood…everything about that film is overrated. Then there’s The Irishman.

1. Laura Dern, Marriage Story
2. Joaquin Phoenix, Joker
3. Brad Pitt, Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood
If these three win as they are expected to it will be for my last place performances in their categories. Brad Pitt belongs in lead and not supporting.January 18, 2020 at 5:47 am #1203290460
Reading through this thread, I wonder if Laura Dern will be nominated for a Gold Derby award as so many derby folk think she’s overrated in “Marriage Story.” I think she gave a solid and decent performance, although I didn’t vote for her on my GD ballot.
I don’t consider any of the Oscar nominees overrated to a ‘ridiculously’ degree, but I wish Scarlett Johansson would have been replaced by Mary Kay Place in best actress – did she really need two acting nominations? She’s probably losing both anyways – she’s not beating Renee and I can’t see her winning supporting actress over the ever so unpopular on Gold Derby Laura Dern. 🙂January 18, 2020 at 5:55 am #1203290462
What is this about Laura Dern playing Laura Dern? If you watch her interviews, she is absolutely nothing like Nora.
If we want to talk about someone playing themselves we could talk about Brad Pitt, but for some reason, we cannot criticize him.
I’m sick of everyone directing all of their hate towards Laura Dern. She does not deserve it.
