I think Wiesz lost SAG because an overlooked sentiment grew for Emily Blunt, like it had with Idris Elba a few years before.
Hmm, that’s a bit of a stretch. Oscar nods came out on the 22nd. Voting closed for SAG 3 days later. After having been open for over a month.

February 24, 2021 at 2:39 pm #1204059499Once again, even with Wiesz winning BAFTA, there is no excuse why she didn’t win SAG.
And what excuse did Amy have to lose SAG?! At least Rachel had the excuse of having a co star in the category.

Lol, here we go again. If Weisz was second, she should have won SAG. Amy was a double nominee that year at SAG, so it would make sense for people to split their votes for her. So Weisz is able to overcome bafta vote splitting but not SAG vote splitting lol.

Pls okay. Sure. Whatever suits your narrative.
Weisz won BAFTA, an Industry award. Amy didn’t. Case solved.

Again, not really. Seeing how Weisz was a hometown girl, in a film that was winning alot and she had never won there, even after winning the Oscar.
Sounds like you are the one fitting your narrative. Again, if Weisz was so strong, she should have won SAG.

The Favourite was not even nominated for SAG Ensemble. That meant that it’s clearly not SAG’s cup of tea, especially when it felt like it’s enough to reward both Emma and Rachel with nomination. Even at that time I was surprised that both got in.

Lol, it got 3 actors in and tied for most nominations overall.

Oh. Didn’t realize the deadline was so close. I guess it still could have pushed some late voters in Blunt’s favor, maybe enough in a close race. Or I guess the SAG voters just really liked her film and performance and the academy didn’t for whatever reason.

She should have been nominated, just in lead. A Quiet Place deserved multiple nods.

Olivia Colman was a lock. Emma and Weisz were inseparable and I though that when they voted Rachel, they voted Emma too (then it costed Regina’s nomination). However, when I said “not their cup of tea”, I talked about why the most nominated as you said couldn’t get into Ensemble while it’s placed as number one (or two?) here in Gold Derby. If they had loved it, they would’ve easily vote the whole ensemble.
Rachel was still number two for me although her performance was clearly my favourite. Why didn’t they spread the winner at Venice like they did for The Master?
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 24, 2021 at 9:46 pm #1204060080Dream picks:
– Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg for Melancholia would have been inspired (with Dunst winning ofc). That said, there were many deserving people other than Gainsbourg who didn’t get in but should have (Olsen, Swinton, Binoche, Theron). It would’ve been so great.
– Annette Bening and Julianne Moore both in lead for The Kids Are All Right. Not my fave performances, but they were definitely both lead and are pretty good.
– Rinko Kikuchi and Adriana Barraza for Babel in lead instead of supporting because…they were leads in an unconventionally structured film with many leads.
– Julianne Moore and Meryl Streep for The Hours. Incidentally, my least favorite performance of the main 3 (Kidman) was the one that was placed here and won. Moore was put in supporting and Streep didn’t get nominated even though I feel like this is one of her best performances for me. It’s up there with her Angels in America performance(s) as some of the most subtle non-showboating work.
– Emma Thompson and Helena Bonham Carter for Howard’s End. They were both leads!

The rest of the cast wasn’t really household names, just because 3 leads get in, doesn’t mean it will get ensemble (The Shape of Water, La La Land)

So were BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians and A Star is Born. There were only two or three household names in those films, yet they got in. I think it happened because they didn’t want Black Panther to be challenged by anything (because The Favourite‘s ensemble was a huge acting ensemble).
It’s actually off-topic, but it’s so good to discuss.
