Even the soundtrack is the best selling soundtrack in history (~50million sold). The movie coupled w soundtrack makes Whitney,  commonly referred to in pop culture as the biggest era (or peak) for a female artist in history.

I Will Always Love You is the best selling female single of all time. I Have Nothing, I’m Every Woman, Run To You,  Queen of the Night all smash HITS and timeless classics.

In this thread we discuss this groundbreaking moment in history and the Legend and Queen herself

This movie is so perfect. The chemsitry between the Queen and Costner. The iconic songs. The genuine suspense about the bodyguard’s fate (this type of a story always has the character heroically take the bullet whether he lives or not). The “run down the tarmac for passionate goodbye kiss”. The trashy jealous sis subplot. This is a cinematic masterpiece. They don’t make them like this anymore. compulsively rewatchable. 10/10

To put things into perspective, the iconic movie made 411M worldwide in 1992 meaning it had no inflated 3D and IMAX tickets. It was rated R. It made more money than 2011’s Captain America (370M) and 2018’s Solo (393M). I’m randomly choosing franchise movies (Pg-13, 3D, Imax, inflation) to show just how big that number was and still is when put in the context. It was Joker of its time.

The general consensus regarding this film that I’ve heard seems to be that it’s pretty mediocre but the soundtrack was great and iconic. Nevertheless there’s no denying it’s popularity, both at the time and still today.

Also, we should give credit where credit is due: “I Will Always Love You” is a cover of a Dolly Parton song, not Whitney Houston’s original work (though her version did end up becoming more popular in the long run).

    Academy-Award winners:

Parasite: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay

Joker: Best Actor - Joaquin Phoenix

    Jojo Rabbit: Best Adapted Screenplay

Wow. The Bodyguard era was truly bigger than we can comprehend.

I would like to add: it made Whitney Houston THE “GP” artist and the most GLOBAL we have seen a woman be, since Mother Teresa and princess Diana. Her appeal extended to 6 continents. In the Middle East, terrorist Osama Bin Laden was plotting to kidnap her from her then ex-husband to marry her and dictator Saddam Hussain of Iraq had IWALY as his campaign song (which he won). The soundtrack/movie and Whitney’s superstardom is unmatched! She truly had the world at her feet

Not to mention her iconic live performances which made her a household name and earned her her titles “The Voice” and “Greatest female vocalist in history” to sweeping every music award show on 🌎 which led many to call her “the most awarded female artist of her time”

This might be because I haven’t watched it in 15 years but I genuinely think she had potential as an actress. She had the attitude and the melancholy. She should have tried with some other roles.

Pantheon of acting: Uta / Elizabeth / Richard / Sandy (Virginia Woolf), Bibi / Liv (Persona), Sandrine (La Ceremonie), Brie (Short Term 12), Jodie (Silence of the Lambs), Jodie (Killing Eve), Eva (Penny Dreadful), Timothée (CMBYN), Lupita (Us)

Agreed! Actually Whitney tried acting quite successfully in The Preachers Wife. Whitney became the highest paid actress at the time & TPW soundtrack is the best selling gospel album of all time spent 26 weeks at #1 on gospel charts but didn’t come close to The Bodyguard.  She famously played fairy godmother in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella too, but that’s it. I wonder if age was the reason she didn’t meddle in acting or she simply wasn’t interested & would rather sing..

Can you imagine an alternate universe where the “Sparkle” remake had been a serious awards contender?

Whitney would’ve made a formidable Supporting Actress nominee in a weak line up.

The scene where she visits the daughter in prison would’ve been her Oscar moment.

“you look like your picture, thank god.”

If your entire basis around this being a good movie is the soundtrack, then talk about it on the music forums.

*biggest film by popstar in History is a big claim given “Moonstruck” and “A Star Is Born” couldbe viewed the same way. If you wouldhave said biggest soundtrack for a film with a popstar in it I’s agree wholeheartedly though

You don’t to say “what are you on?” when someone insults The Bodygaurd. If I said that about Citizen Kane, sure, you could say that. But a film with a 34% on Rotten Tomatos doesn’t deserve to be defended with the phrase “what are you on?”

Lmfao, I just remembered it also led the Razzie noms in 1992. The perfect example of being bad yet iconic
