Inspired by the “Six Spot”/”Six Circuit” series of posts on AwardsCircuit (https://www.awardscircuit.com/tag/six-spot/), who do you think came closest to getting nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor for each year? (I’ll be going back as far as 2000 with my guesses)
(Note 1: For instances such as 2006, where DiCaprio probably came closest for The Departed in Lead but couldn’t have been nominated alongside his already nominated performance, I’ll be going with whoever I think came closest after them)
(Note 2: If there is already a topic like this somewhere else on here that I missed, just add this to that)
Best Actor:
- 2000: Michael Douglas, Wonder Boys
- 2001: Gene Hackman, The Royal Tenenbaums
- 2002: Richard Gere, Chicago
- 2003: Tom Cruise, The Last Samurai
- 2004: Paul Giamatti, Sideways
- 2005: Russell Crowe, Cinderella Man
- 2006: Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan
- 2007: James McAvoy, Atonement
- 2008: Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire
- 2009: Michael Stuhlbarg, A Serious Man
- 2010: Ryan Gosling, Blue Valentine
- 2011: Michael Fassbender, Shame
- 2012: John Hawkes, The Sessions
- 2013: Tom Hanks, Captain Phillips
- 2014: Ralph Fiennes, The Grand Budapest Hotel
- 2015: Johnny Depp, Black Mass
- 2016: Joel Edgerton, Loving
- 2017: James Franco, The Disaster Artist
- 2018: John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman
Best Supporting Actor:
- 2ooo: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Almost Famous
- 2001: Hayden Christensen, Life as a House
- 2002: Dennis Quaid, Far from Heaven
- 2003: Albert Finney, Big Fish
- 2004: Freddie Highmore, Finding Neverland
- 2005: Don Cheadle, Crash
- 2006: Jack Nicholson, The Departed
- 2007: Tommy Lee Jones, No Country for Old Men
- 2008: James Franco, Milk
- 2009: Alfred Molina, An Education
- 2010: Matt Damon, True Grit
- 2011: Albert Brooks, Drive
- 2012: Leonardo DiCaprio, Django Unchained
- 2013: Daniel Brühl, Rush
- 2014: Josh Brolin, Inherent Vice
- 2015: Idris Elba, Beasts of No Nation
- 2016: Hugh Grant, Florence Foster Jenkins
- 2017: Michael Stuhlbarg, Call Me By Your Name
- 2018: Timothée Chalamet, Beautiful Boy
I’ll be following this up with a similar topic for Lead/Supporting Actress as well (unless there’s already a thread for that as well, in which case I’ll just post my thoughts there)

It was tough for me to pick between the two of them, they were probably #6 and #7. The only reason I’d give slight edge to Stuhlbarg would be that I’m guessing several people voted him as a ‘body of work’ vote considering he was in three BP nominees that year, and CMBYN was his most Oscar-y role of the three.

Also I’m sure Hoffman wasn’t close to a nomination for Almost Famous, I think Gary Oldman was 6th for The Contender.

Those were both ones that I had a hard time deciding between the ones I put and the ones that you said – my only doubt for Bardem is that I’m guessing lots of voters weren’t going to vote for a performance in a Bond movie. And I think Oldman probably would’ve been nominated if he hadn’t stirred up a fuss at the time about his character getting ‘ruined’ in editing and creating that controversy. Probably still came close though, and he and Hoffman both would’ve been beloved character actors with no recognition at the time, so they both could’ve ridden that wave. I could still definitely see arguments for both of the ones you said though.

I’m sure I got some of these very wrong, so if there’s a more likely one that I missed anywhere, just let me know.

Good choices but I am not really seeing Pacino here. I like the movie very much but from what I remember, the movie wasn’t really liked and the kind of film that hardly gets nominated in that category.
Steve Martin’s name pops up whenever it’s about missed nominations. I am wondering whether the academy liked him enough to have him just miss the line-up or whether they really did not like that kind of performance and thus, he wasn’t even close – not easy to figure out.
