Isn’t Sally Field more likely for 1985 and either of Jamie Lee Curtis or Shirley MacLaine for 1988?

Otherwise I’ve only seen Nuts from that list, which one of the rest is essential to check out?

I don’t think Field was really in contention in 85 for Murphy’s Romance. James Garner was kind of a shocking unexpected nomination. Cher was expected to be nominated since she’d won Cannes.

In 1988 MacLaine could have been sixth. I’d say she and Lahti were neck and neck for sixth and seventh. Jamie Lee Curtis not so much. Curtis probably would have been somewhere in the top 10 along with Michelle Pfeiffer (Married to the Mob) and Barbara Hershey (A World Apart.)

I think most of those films are worth checking out. Absence of Malice is a little dull at times and Romancing the Stone doesn’t quite hold up as well but the other’s are all worth seeing. Cross Creek and Running on Empty are especially good. Extremeties is a great play. The movie captures it pretty well but it is still more exciting on stage.

1986 Barbara Hershey, Hannah and Her Sisters

I’d imagine Vanessa Redgrave from Prick Up Your Ears as sixth in 1987.

1989 is quite difficult with the two ladies from Enemies: A Love Story pushing out other candidates.

Cross Creek and Running on Empty are especially good.

Checked out and liked both of them! Cross Creek is definitely a must-see, it deserved all of its nominations, should have been up for cinematography as well. Had it been released a year later, Mary S. definitely would have been among the five. It’s puzzling that the HFPA ignored it completely.
