This Oscar season, they’re have been many complaints about the idea of category fraud. Most of them have been lodged at Rooney Mara for Carol and Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl, but there have been others that I have noticed. But, as I watch certain films, I notice some performances straddle the line between lead and supporting. This became evident when I was voting for the Gold Derby Film Awards and I noticed that some performances I thought were lead were in supporting and others I thought were supporting could be put into lead. So, for the sake of the awards, I think we have to decide as a community what category some performances belong in. So tell me, for those on the bubble type of performances, what category do we place them in. Some examples include:

    Rooney Mara in Carol
Alicia Vikander in The Danish Girl
    Alicia Vikander in Ex Machina
Paul Dano in Love and Mercy
Jason Segel in End of the Tour
    Jacob Tremblay in Room
The casts of Spotlight, Straight Outta Compton, and the Big Short
Any others you guys can think of that should be clarified

They put them in both categories for Goldderby awards so that you as a voter can decide, the same way the Oscars do.

    Definitely, Jacob Tremblay in Room
If that kid is supporting, then Brie Larson made a cameo.

Alicia Vikander could go either both ways, I think it’s acceptable.
Rooney Mara is as supporting as Christoph Waltz was in Django Unchained. She is not the main character, but for runtime she is even more lead than Blanchett.

    * Some of these are already correctly submitted, just solidifying for accuracy:

CO-LEAD PERFORMANCES (should have to submit Lead):
Rooney Mara- Carol (w/ Cate Blanchett)
Alicia Vikander- The Danish Girl (w/ Eddie Redmayne)
Paul Dano- Love & Mercy (w/ John Cusack)
Jacob Tremblay- Room (w/ Brie Larson)
Charlize Theron- Mad Max: Fury Road (w/ Tom Hardy)
Jason Segel- The End of the Tour (w/ Jesse Eisenberg)
Tom Courtenay- 45 Years (w/ Charlotte Rampling)

    LEAD PERFORMANCE:
    O’Shea Jackson- Straight Outta Compton
Ryan Gosling- The Big Short (narrator, film started and ended with him)
Samuel L. Jackson- The Hateful Eight
Michael Keaton- Spotlight (head of the Spotlight team at the Boston Globe)
Mya Taylor- Tangerine (I actually think the ladies are in opposite categories from what they’re submitted in)

    SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE:
    Alicia Vikander- Ex Machina
    Jason Mitchell- Straight Outta Compton
    Christian Bale- The Big Short
    Steve Carell- The Big Short
    Mark Ruffalo- Spotlight
    Rachel McAdams- Spotlight
Harrison Ford- Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Disney reportedly placed him in Lead?)
Jennifer Jason Leigh- Anomalisa (avoiding possible vote split with The Hateful Eight)
    Kitana Kiki Rodriguez- Tangerine

Alicia Vikander is supporting all the way in Ex Machina. Domhnall Gleeson is the only lead in that film.

Thank god I found this thread! Okay, let’s mention all the frauds this year. In no particular order:

    Natalie Portman, Vox Lux
    Mahershala Ali, Green Book
    Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman
    Emma Stone, The Favourite
    Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
    Olivia Colman, The Favourite
    Thomasin McKenzie, Leave No Trace
    Rachel McAdams, Disobedience
    Alex Wolff, Hereditary

Anyone remember what was the record of nominated category frauds in one year? This year we’re gonna break it!

The Favourite has 3 leads. I don’t know why the studio keeps trying to make either of them Supporting. The closest would be Colman, but she still looks like a co-lead.

They want to get all three nominated, and the possibility of getting three lead nominations is nil. Therefore, they’re trying to work out who could be counted as Supporting (Stone and Weisz, I’m guessing) and who must be a lead (Colman).

This reminds me of Crimes of the Heart. Spacek, Keaton and Lange we’re all lead.

they’ll cancel each other out if all 3 try to be nominated in the supp category. Stone should go lead since she’s already got her oscar and that way she’ll give Colman the best shot a winning in  supp. actress.

I don’t think either Rachel or Emma will get nominated.
