We’ve seen other child stars like Abigail Breslin and Jacob Tremblay be presenters when they were either nominated themselves or their film was nominated, so I don’t know why they didn’t continue the tradition with him. Hill’s stint as a presenter at the Critics Choice Awards this year is exactly what the Oscars and all other award shows need: someone who is charming and hilarious, but not to the point of overstaying their welcome, like Jennifer Coolidge at the Golden Globes. I hate it when a presenter’s comedic banter goes on WAY too long!!

January 28, 2023 at 2:51 am #1205272069I’d just want the trend to continue and have another woman celebrity presenting best picture, and with no male companion.
Because in case someone needs a reminder, this wasn’t the case for no other than 27 consecutive years from 1992 to 2018.
So there’s still a lot to compensate for.

No disrespect to your post, but please, please, please, do not do this. I hate when award shows try to cater their presenters or show to who might win, it always has the potential to backfire (and is extremely embarrassing when it does).
I still cannot get over how embarrassing and humiliating it was in 2021 when the Academy purposely moved best actor to the last award presented as a purposeful tribute to presumed winner Chadwick Boseman. It may have seemed like a sweet and sentimental gesture only to have it completely blow up in their faces when not only did he not win, but the actual winner was not even there to accept.
I also remember a couple of years ago the Emmy awards tried something like you are suggesting by having Elisabeth Moss and Samira Wiley present supporting actress in a drama to only have someone not from Handmaid’s Tale win. I remember that being awkward at the time.
More importantly, this is truly Ariana DeBose’s award to present. Having Harrison Ford there would be awfully disrespectful to her. Sometimes the Oscar’s feel like they are losing their prestige and morphing into the People’s choice or MTV Video awards. And one of the few honors and traditions they can cling to is allowing former acting winners to present the next year. I always thought that was one of the neatest honors of winning an Oscar. Nor do I know any other awards show that has this same honor. So let Ariana DeBose have her brief moment to shine and present this category by herself.
Not to mention this would be extremely embarrassing if Quan happens to lose.

Here’s another example: At the 2013 Tony Awards, many people believed Tom Hanks was winning Best Lead Actor in a Play with Nathan Lane as the likely alternative. They even had Lane’s frequent co-star, Matthew Broderick, and Hanks’ former onscreen mama, Sally Field, present that category on the telecast. Yet, the winner was Tracy Letts.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 7:07 am #1205272310^Ouch, that is another great example. I understand the intentions behind these decisions are often positive, but still the possibility for things to go wrong is always present, so please simply do not do something like the above examples.
If I remember correctly, the 2022 Oscars telecast was one of the worst we have ever seen. Instead of being a night to honor the magic of the movies and the shared experience of the cinema, it felt like a night of random, C-list celebrities, failed and unnecessary tributes, and silly nonsense that has no place at the Oscars.
I love seeing casts reuntie to present awards. That is a step in the right direction. Please try to have movie “stars” as presenters. Or people from nominated films present. Do we really need Jacob Elordi or extreme sports stars presenting awards? And one set of presenters for an award is enough, the recent trend of presenters announcing presenters is getting old rather quickly.
Please limit the songs to only ones that are nominated (I get why they wanted to perform “Bruno”, but it ultimately just added to the bloated run time.)
Not to be mean spirited, but if someone is presenting, please make sure they are in good health and can actively participate at the time. It clearly appeared that Liza Minnelli was not in good health when she was on stage for Best Picture. While the intention was truly sweet and kind to have the two of them present together, it came off as slightly uncomfortable and sad to see her like that.
And please no more terrible movie tributes. This was the second lack luster James Bond tribute they have had in a decade. If you are going to do a tribute, then do it properly and respectfully.
I am also glad to see them going back to a single host. There simply is not enough time or room to have three individuals hosting one show. Two has worked in the past, but three is one host too many.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 7:16 am #1205272325Liza Minnelli should not be hidden away just because she has health problems. Nobody should. I could not disagree more with that thought pattern.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 7:32 am #1205272350Just please get someone that actually has something to do with animation to present the animated feature category. Lord & Miller would be great presenters I’m sure. Or one of the Pixar guys. Pete Docter is a great public speaker and 3-time winner in this category. I’m sure he could actually say something meaningful about the process of making an animated feature.
ReplyCopy URLJanuary 28, 2023 at 7:35 am #1205272352^I was not saying she needs to be hidden away, or anyone with health problems needs to be “hidden away”. But if you are going to honor someone at the Oscars, which is essentially what having her there was, then do it in a way they can fully and meaningfully participate.
I doubt most of us would want to be seen on such a public stage if we were not at our best, and I am sure that goes for celebrities as well. I am not saying she should never leave home or attend award shows again, but it was slightly sad to see her in that condition, and I wish they would not have put her (or anyone else) in that position in the first place.
At least if you ask me, a nice video tribute celebrating the 50th anniversary of Cabaret with a short, pre-recorded video message by Liza from the comfort of her own home would have been a wonderful tribute to her. You could have even had a former costar/s of hers present the tribute.
