The Oscar nominees for Best Actress of 1981 were:

Katharine Hepburn, On Golden Pond – WINNER
Meryl Streep, The French Lieutenant’s Woman
Marsha Mason, Only When I Laugh
    Susan Sarandon, Atlantic City
    Diane Keaton, Reds

Did all of them deserve to be nominated? If you knock out one or two, who would you replace them with? Others who were in the running:

    Sally Field, Absence of Malice
    Sissy Spaccek, Raggedy Man
    Bernadette Peters, Pennies from Heaven
    Carol Burnette, The Four Seasons
    Liza Minnelli, Arthur
Jill Clayburgh, First Monday in October
    Glenda Jackson, Stevie

Who REALLY gave the best female acting performance on celluloid that year?

Faye Dunaway in Mommie Dearest; she was brilliant! She captures Joan Crawford and this is a movie I enjoy watching…

    My five finalists:

    Faye Dunaway, Mommie Dearest
    Katharine Hepburn, On Golden Pond
    Glenda Jackson, Stevie
    Diane Keaton, Reds
Marsha Mason, Only When I Laugh

Marília Pêra in Pixote would be my choice, but I like Meryl’s performance best of the nominees (funny how it’s one of her least personal favorites).

It wasn’t eligible in ’81 but it should be noted that Isabelle Adjani gave one of the decade’s finest performances in Possession.

If it was as appreciated, I would’ve picked Faye Dunaway. But out of the list, Meryl would be my choice.

Faye Dunaway gets my vote for her superb performance as Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest! I’m not a particularly big fan of hers but that performances was beyond phenomenal!

Out of who was nominated I owuld pick Marsha Mason for Only When I Laugh. Katherine Hepburn eas excellent though in On Golden Pond.

For me, Sarandon should’ve won way back then and not in 1996.

Keaton would’ve made another worthy choice as well.

The other three don’t really factor into this for me.

Hmmmm…I’d go with Diane from that nom list. Susan next. Hard not to be happy for Katherine though….

    Wouldn’t drop any of them.

Keaton gave an epic performance in Reds and she would have been my choice. I’m guessing that she was a close second or third. She probably lost because she had recently won for Annie Hall. Her film won best director and was nominated for 12 awards.

Hepburn was sympathetic and touching in On Golden Pond. She had genuine chemistry with Henry Fonda. It’s not surprising that both won for the maudlin film. The film was a crowd pleaser that was also the second highest grossing film of that year.

Streep won the Golden Globe and BAFTA and was a serious threat. She was up against Hepburn and Keaton whose films had far more support that year. I’ve always found that film to be muddled mess but maybe I need to rewatch it. I do remember being impressed by Streep and Irons in their roles.

Mason and Sarandon were non-factors. The former was past her prime and the later was just lucky to be nominated. I’m fond of several of the performances that were snubbed but I don’t think any would have seriously challenged the top three contenders.

At the time my choice was Marsha Mason in “Only When I Laugh’. I recently saw this movie again and now I’m not so sure. For me it would either be Mason or Hepburn (in “On Golden Pond”).

Meryl Streep, The French Lieutenant’s Woman
Marsha Mason, Only When I Laugh

All five of these actresses gave Oscar worthy performances in my opinion, with my personal favorite being Diane Keaton since I adored “Reds” and she was terrific in it. But, Faye Dunaway should have definitely been in the top 5, replacing Marsha Mason (who was excellent as well as her co-stars James Coco and Joan Hackett). Excellent year for women in film.
