Russell Crowe won the Best Actor Oscar at the 73rd Academy Awards, and he seemed quite surprised when he did.

Going into the ceremony, here’s where the nominees/precursors went:

Bardem – nominated for Golden Globe
Crowe – won Critics Choice; nominated for Golden Globe, BAFTA & SAG
Hanks – won Golden Globe; nominated for BAFTA & SAG
Harris – no noms at Globes, BAFTA, SAG or Critics Choice
Rush – nominated for Golden Globe, BAFTA and SAG

So who was considered the frontrunner that evening? It seemed like the precursors were all split (Golden Globe Drama went to Hanks, Critics Choice went to Crowe, BAFTA went to Jamie Bell who wasn’t nominated at the Oscars, SAG went to Benicio del Toro, who was nominated in Supporting at the Oscars)

If I had to guess, I would assume that Tom Hanks might have been the frontrunner, considering his Golden Globe win would have been the most high-profile precursor that any of the Best Actor nominees received.

I don’t remember this one having a clear front runner. It was between Hanks and Crowe but then when the ceremony started and Marcia Gay Harden won from seemingly out of nowhere it started to look like Ed Harris could take it.

Russell Crowe definitely benefited from Gladiator being one of the most-nominated films that year, so that’s why I think he won. I’m not complaining, though. It was a well-deserved win. It’s a shame Ridley Scott didn’t win Best Director, though.

    <p style=”text-align: left;”>You didn’t tell us who won in the other precursors</p>

Taron Egerton (Rocketman) for best actor. Charlize Theron looks great in Bombshell teaser
