mmh I’d argue Daniel Day Lewis was definitely second in 2018. The Academy loved Phantom Thread enough to nominate it across the board despite no love from the precursors.

Not at all lol. He couldn’t even win at National Society, a place that loves him. Chalameh was probably the runner up but a very distant one.

 Russell Crowe
 Daniel Day Lewis
 Bill Murray
 Leonardo DiCaprio
 Joaquin Phoenix
Ummm, Peter O’Toole? Forest Whitaker had this so out front so I’m going with the one that made all of the precursors.
George Clooney (?) Sure, Depp won the Globe but was snubbed by SAG and BAFTA
 Mickey Rourke
 Colin Firth
 Jesse Eisenberg
 George Clooney

 Matt Damon (?) LMFAO
 Denzel Washington

I disagree with you about this. Remember that before the Oscars, Day-Lewis announced that Phantom Thread would be his final movie role and I think that the academy does not want to go political for this – awarding Day-Lewis his fourth Best Actor award. Instead, they might give their second best to Chalamet because sadly Daniel Kaluuya and Denzel Washington were just too far in the race. Well, this does not mean that Chalamet was the second place for nothing, I mean, he deserved it. Even the award itself. But Gary Oldman was just really unbeatable.
