I really don’t think Shire was second- the only one who could have beaten Dunaway was Liv Ullman who had been a pretty noticeable presence in Hollywood at that point with her snub for Scenes Of A Marriage and she won all the major critics awards. The film also got a Best Director nomination too.

    Oh yes I agree now.

I forgot about Ullman. Yes I’d put her in second. (and as we always say Talia Shire really blew it by wanting to be put in lead. She’d have won supporting. I haven’t seen that movie in so long though that I can’t remember which category I think her screen time merits.)

I’ve found that a bit off putting personally. I think that Winger was more deserving that year.

The thing about MacLaine’s saying “I deserve this” was tied into her metaphysical books. The first of which Out on a Limb was out at that time. I read some of it (was too young to really understand it) since we had it around the house. I do remember that part of her point was that we have to be able to accept the fact that we deserve good things to happen to us. She was on lots of talk shows explaining this at the time.

When she said that at the Oscars since I had some familiarity with her book I knew she was saying that as part of her spiritual studies and not out of ego. I was a little surprised at the flack she got for it but I guess if you weren’t familiar with the books it did seem egotistical. I wonder if that is why she was never nominated again. She had three near misses in the late eighties with Madame Soustazka, Steel Magnolias and Postcards from the Edge which seemed like a sure thing.

You don’t think her spiritual studies are a part of her ego?

Nicole Kidman, Kate Winslet, Judi Dench, Rosamund Pike, Natalie Portman and especially Margot Robbie weren’t second lol. Rosamund was probably dead last by the way she was the sole nomination for Gone Girl.

Were you referring to Kidman not being second for Moulin Rouge or for Lion? And Dench for Notes On A Scandal or another nomination? And for Winslet?

I really don’t see Susan Sarandon as the 5th in 1994, she already had the overdue factor by her 4th nomination. She was at least ahead of Miranda Richardson whose movie was barely seen I believe.
