No way was Balfe top 2. If AMPAS accepted Dench then surely the BAFTAs which are the biggest fans of Dench would have nominated Dench. Balfe was a jury pick as a lowkey actress who finally got their first film breakout role. Buckley was actually the one in top 2 seeing how she had so much passion to get in at the Oscars and Buckley being a jury pick makes less sense since she already got her big BAFTA moment when she was nominated in Best Actress for Wild Rose.

There is no way Buckley was top 2 if Colman missed.
ReplyCopy URLWe just have to accept that the BAFTA top 2s and the Oscar 5s did not match exactly as we had anticipated. It’s nothing more than that. It’s not a necessity that since Leo, Balfe, Gaga and Haim missed the Oscars, they can’t be the BAFTA top two. Likewise there is no such obligation that since Colman and Dunst missed the BAFTA nomination,they can’t win the Oscar.

There is no way Balfe would have been the preferred performance from the Brits over Dame Judi Dench. Balfe wasn’t even nominated at LFCC unlike Hinds.Buckley was nominated at LFCC however. Dench won at AACTA which tends to reflect BAFTA nominees more. Balfe has so far won 0 major awards from critics or the industry.
Colman’s performance at BAFTA is unrelated to Buckley’s nomination. Best Supporting Actress is a different category and Colman had to fare off against a critically acclaimed veteran BIFA winner Scanlan for the top 2 slot. There was less competition for Buckley in Supporting Actress and the BIFA Supporting Actress winner was not even nominated.
