J.K. Simmons – Being the Ricardos
Judi Dench – Belfast
Kathy Bates – Richard Jewell
Marina de Tavira – Roma
Lesley Manville – Phantom Thread
Charlotte Rampling – 45 Years
Tom Hardy – The Revenant
Marion Cotillard – Two Days, One Night
Jacki Weaver – Silver Linings Playbook
Max von Sydow – Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Javier Bardem – BiutifulThese are all nominees from the Academy Awards since the 2011 ceremony that were nominated despite little-to-no buzz/major critics nominations.
Some of these could be explained as “riding their films coattails” to nominations (J.K. Simmons, Judi Dench, Tom Hardy, Jacki Weaver). Others, seemingly, just came out of left field (I only dated back to the 2011 ceremony, but who can forget Maggie Gyllenhaal for Crazy Heart???)
So, my question, who will be the surprising nominee(s) this year?

Supporting Actor – Woody Harrelson, Triangle of Sadness

AACTA did it already, which is the same as Dench last year.

I brought this up in the AACTA thread as well. As I mentioned there, I can see Woody Harrelson scoring nominations in both.
I also noted that the AACTAs nominated Jean Smart in Supporting Actress for Babylon as well. Perhaps this is another left field nomination that we could get.

Albrecht Schuch in Supporting ActorJanuary 23, 2023 at 2:27 am #1205258546I can see Harrelson getting in. I put him in as soon as the Predictions Centre opened last year. Toying with putting him back in.
I have Triangle of Sadness in Picture, Original Screenplay and Supporting Actress so why not add King Woody…

Albrecht Schuch in Supporting ActorNot predicting it rn, but IF there is a Plemons-esque “I thought he was a jury save at BAFTA” kind of nomination, I think it’s him.
