    There are no records of any Best Director nominees or winners for 1986’s BAFTA ceremony when The Purple Rose of Cairo won Best Film. Does anyone know why? Did they completely skip the category that year?

    I don’t think they had a Best Director category that year for some reason.

    The 1986 ceremony indeed did not have a Best Director category, as the Best Film category nominated (and awarded) both directors and producers for each film.
