Last year, Mahershala Ali (the winner), Richard E. Grant, Adam Driver, and Timothee Chalamet all got the precursor nominations, while Sam Elliot and Sam Rockwell had bumpy roads. However, Mahershala, Richard, Adam, and both Sams got the Oscar nomination, while Timothee was snubbed.

This year, Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Tom Hanks all got the precursors, while Willem Dafoe, Song Kang-ho, and Anthony Hopkins are all fighting for the last spot. Or are they?

I think a mixture of two of the bumpy precursor nominees (my picks: Song and Willem) are getting the nominations, while one of the “clean” precursor nominees will get snubbed. Brad’s getting in, and I think Al’s getting support as well. So it’s either Joe or Tom. It doesn’t help them that neither will be campaigning particularly hard (well, none of them will, but it hurts them more than Brad and Al).

My prediction? Joe will be snubbed. While it does look like Tom is going the same path as Timothee (both were the only nominees for their films-well, A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood got a screenplay nod in Critic’s Choice, but still), I think Joe straight up doesn’t care (he didn’t even show up for the Golden Globes) and I have a bad feeling that The Irishman might underperform at the Oscars. Robert De Niro is not getting in, so it stands to reason that Joe may not, either. Also, Tom has more of an “overdue” factor for a nomination, since he gave performances that were arguably due for a nomination but got snubbed.

Oscars 2021: I support Denis Villeneuve (Dune), David Fincher (Mank), Willem Dafoe (The Card Counter), and Glenn Close (Hillbilly Elegy).

    Movie-lover overall.

Wasn’t Timothee Chalamet Amy Adams’d in the first place though?

Yeah, but since it’s in Supporting Actor, I named it after Timothee.

Tom Hanks is the king of being snubbed so if anyone gets snubbed after making it everywhere it’s him. Right now I’m pretty confident in the consesus top 5 on the Gold Derby odds though. Pitt/Pesci/Pacino/Hanks/Song

What if they just snub Hanks again? He seems so snubbable.

I think his Golden Globe speech may have helped him though.

Yeah. I forgot about that. That must have reminded them he exists. These last two days must have helped people like him, Egerton and Awkwafina who were vulnerable.

Chalamet may be the big name in Supporting Actor (no one saw/liked his movie anyway so it wasn’t that big of a surprise) but Amy Adams getting snubbed for Arrival stands out as a praised performance that hit all the precursors in an acclaimed film and she still lost the nomination.

If it’s just supporting actor, it’ll be Hanks. The Academy has shown recently that they’re not just willing to name-check him for a solid performance the way they are for someone like Meryl Streep. However, his recent string of surprising snubs has built up a little bit of “hey, we haven’t nominated Hanks in a while” momentum so I think he’s relatively safe.

If someone’s in danger of hitting GG/CC/SAG/BAFTA but missing Oscar this year, I’d say it’s ScarJo in Best Actress for Marriage Story. The passion for the film, minus Dern’s performance, seems to have died down, and Driver has more support, so voters might feel comfortable leaving her off the ballot if they want to include two of Erivo/Nyong’o/Awkwafina while still keeping Zellweger/Theron/Ronan. The only other person I think may even be in a little danger of this is DiCaprio, but he’s relatively safe imo (ScarJo is probably mostly safe too, just most likely to me, especially if they feel okay with just nominating her in Supporting for Jojo Rabbit).

Can we all agree that Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins) was the one that should have been snubbed for Amy Adams

Meryl Streep was superb in Florence Foster Jenkins. She definitely deserved her nomination. I had (still do) doubts about Ruth Negga, but she was still better than Amy Adams. Amy Adams did nothing award worthy. Talk about overrated

Someone else – Theron. Those SAG noms for flopshell looks like a fluke compared how everyone else nominated the film.

    Sorry, Tom.
Although his Globes speech makes it harder to predict his snub.

And yes, Meryl Streep should’ve been replaced with Amy Adams.
