Its chances for anything beyond the Globes have been downplayed this whole season. A week ago if you so much as suggested that it might be even a fringe contender for PGA and ACE nominations, you would’ve been laughed out of every awards season forum. Why?

Personally, though I never thought of it as a major contender for BP/BD, it seemed logical to expect this film to have some noticeable presence throughout the awards season. It’s an Aaron Sorkin film, which means it will be seen by much of the industry. On top of that, it has received generally positive reviews from critics and has proven to be a crowd-pleaser. So why has it not been taken more seriously?

Because it missed out on SAG and the critics groups.  Right now it is benefitting from being one of the only American studio films amidst a bunch of indies.  If it does well on it’s wide release, it could be a late breaking contender like Hidden Figures or American Sniper.

    Molly’s Game = Nightcrawler.

I dont expect it’s guild run to translate to Oscar. Chastain missed SAG to Dench.

A screenplay nod was always a given, and Picture is certainly possible, but it’s still on the outside looking in.

I think the big reason that people are “underestimating” it is the absence of buzz. No one is talking about it or passionate about it.

Not at all.  Nightcrawler was unexpected an indie hit that was too dark for the academy.  Molly’s Game is a studio film that was positioned to do well at Awards season.  If anything, I, Tonya = Nightcrawler.

Chastain is also usually involved in many late-season Oscars non-starters (see “A Most Violent Year,” “Miss Sloane,” for receipts). Many probably thought that “Molly’s Game” would follow suit and Chastain’s poor timing luck.

This is an easy one to answer.  It has 71 on Metacritic.

Sure, contenders can overcome low scores, but even that is lower than normal and coupling that with the late release should have sealed its fate.

And I say this as someone who has been predicting Jessica Chastain for an Oscar nomination over Saoirse Ronan all season.

"I don't even believe in god, but I'm going to thank her tonight."

The racist Amy Pascal is a producer for this as well as The Post and isn’t she a chairman for the PGA? I saw her name on that article when they chose to give Get Out that Honorary award

This movie won’t go anywhere. It’s only chance is Adapted Screenplay for reasons we already know. And it can even miss that one.

Chastain certainly got a boost with PGA, I can imagine people going crazy thinking she has a shot and in the end, it could very well happen. I think she could end up being that Joy/Loving nomination you were so sure wouldn’t happen and then it did.

One thing’s for sure, Jessica Chastain NEEDS to add in her contracts a clause that prevents her Oscar films from debuting too late and too under the radar. She’ll never get a third nomination if they keep screwing up her films like this.

It’s because almost everyone here has an irrational hatred for Jessica Chastain.

Well, the good thing is that 99% it’s getting nommed for Adapted Screenplay, cuz the competition is too low.

Seriously? You’re gonna make me waste my time and consult the exact same Wikipedia page you probably looked at just to prove myself right?  The movie was bankrolled by Sony under a separate division that allowed Amy Pascal to remain employed.  STX is the distributor.

This will only get an Adapted Screenplay nod and that’s it. Chastain won’t get in over the consensus five.
