The Academy hates him. He should have been nominated for The Truman Show, Man on the Moon, The Grinch and Eternal Sunshine.

Would have been fine with him replacing Benigni or Hanks.

He was snubbed of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but that was a nearly impossible year of worthy contenders. Also left off the list were great actors who were in nominated and winning films!

    2004 LEAD ACTOR
    Likely 2nd tier:
    – Javier Bardem, The Sea Inside (won FL Film; Makeup nom)
    – Gael Garia Bernal, The Motorcycle Diaries (won Song; nom Adap Script)
    – Jim Carrey, ESOTSM (won Orig Script; nom Kate Winslet)
    – Paul Giamatti, Sideways (won Adap Script; 4 other noms)
    – Liam Neeson, Kinsey (nom Laura Linney)

    Likely 3rd tier:
    – Gerard Butler, The Phantom of the Opera
    – Tom Cruise, Collateral
    – Kevin Kline, De-Lovely
    – Jude Law, Closer
    – Kevin Spacey, Beyond the Sea

    The actual noms:
    – Don Cheadle, Hotel Rwanda
    – Johnny Depp, Finding Neverland
    – Leonardo DiCaprio, The Aviator
    – Clint Eastwood, Million Dollar Baby
    *Jamie Foxx, Ray

There are 15 deserving candidates, and those are the ones that just jump to mind. Personally, I would have taken out Depp and Eastwood and replaced w/ Carrey and Neeson. Regardless, this many candidates makes Carrey’s snub a little easier to swallow. (But in keeping it real, if anyone was in a solid sixth place, it was Giamatti.)

I feel like the more egregious snub with Jim Carrey is for “Man on the Moon,” but he’s perfectly deserving at least three times in that, “The Truman Show,” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” I think some voters still hold his low-brow comedy films against him, but it’s not like voters haven’t overlooked less-than-stellar resumes before when it comes to Oscar wins, and he’s made a lot of people in Hollywood a lot of money. I would like to say that his time is coming, but he’s one of those rare cases where I don’t really believe that. His time in the Oscar sweet spot has sadly passed and won’t return. But anything is possible as they say.

I never really liked “The Truman Show”. I gotta rewatch it and maybe I’ll view it differently but I loved “Man on The Moon”. He should have been nominated for that one.

I think the best actor lineup for the 2001 Oscars was pretty cemented. I don’t think he would have beaten Crowe, who seemed pretty unstoppable that year or any of the other nominees.

I used to think that about Christopher Plummer. I thought his nomination for The Last Station was a fluke then he came back two years later and wreaked havoc on the awards circuit.

Jim Carrey just has to stop making garbage. I think the right project can definitely catapult him to an Oscar nomination. But he needs to step away from those “paycheck roles” and find better material. If Matthew McConaughey, Jared Leto, Kim Basinger, Mo’Nique, etc. can get nominated (and win Oscars), I think Carrey still has a shot. Hollywood sure does love a comeback.

Just saw this for the first time and wow, Jim Carrey’s performance was excellent, and the movie was well paced and thrilling and funny. How did he not get Oscar nominated? This movie would’ve made best picture in the expanded lineup era.

Also Ed harris’s performance just didn’t do it for me. I thought Noah Emmerich was the supporting standout.

Between this and Kidding (the performance of Carrey’s career), nobody does existential crises better than Jim Carrey

I like The Truman Show and I like Carey’s performance in it but I don’t think he was snubbed. It was a solid performance but not undeniable.

I thought he was deserving for The Grinch as well.
